Ok so I am on my way to visit inlaws in Baton Rouge, anything changed much since I was last there. I lived there about 5 years ago and am familiar with the area. Just wanted to see if there were any new restaurants to check out or new gun shops. I plan on eating at Sammy's and mike Anderson's and the kids love Boutins. Those were my favorites and I like to check out Bowie outdoor and Heberts guns. You guys have any suggestions let me know. Did I say I am not looking forward to the drive either?

I have to admit Baton Rouge is one of my least favorite cities in the south. It is the only place I have seen drivers worse than Dallas and they don't have the excuse of heavy traffic like Dallas does.

Best thing to do in Baton Rouge is check your map and find the quickest way out. I was there for 5 days a few months back for a tournament and the three or four places that were supposed to have good food, had waiting lines as long as the traffic jams in Houston, and the other places,..... well there was a reason there was no waiting lines at them. Also may have the worst Luby's I have ever seen. It was scary bad.

The people are certainly unique also. Standing in line at one eatery there was some girl that appeared to be about 12 years old in a semi-transparent night thingie, making out with some old guy that had to be drawing social security and seriously they needed a room for their activities. It was like walking into the twilight zone.

In March I ate at Parrain's and it was excellent. It's at 3225 Perkins Rd just a short distance off I-10. The Crab and Crawfish appetizer was outstanding as was the Andouille Encrusted Fish Entree. My son ate there at a different time and had the same reaction.

I forgot about Jim's firearms and if I have time tomorrow I may go check out the Gonzales gunshow, got some good deals there when I lived here. I won't be doing much tonight we drove straight through last night. I have had about 4 hours of sleep since 7am yesterday. My friend in Walker invited me out to his place Monday evening for some good Cajun country cooking.

Also there is a Cabelas at the exit that you take to go to the Gonzales gun show.

Georges on Perkins road has a great catfish platter as well as other dishes. Not fancy, just great food.

I'd bump Boutin's off your list in favor of Parrain's for the food. It's like a slightly classier Sammy's with a little better menu.

If you're going to Walker, you might stop off at Bass Pro beforehand, it's right when you get into Denham, and the store is larger than Cabela's.

Changes- traffic is worse than it was 5 yrs ago, more people on the roads than ever. LSU is now pretty blocked off, you can't drive into the campus like you used to be able to. Can still get to Mike's habitat, and Tiger Stadium has been refurbished so it looks nicer than when you last were here.

I trust you've done the whole plantation thing; if not, Nottoway, Houmas House and Oak Alley are the best.

Sounds like you wandered a bit too far east and wound up in Livingston Parish :D
Baton Rouge really doesn't have much going for it other than LSU and being the state capital and all.....just my opinion. Take away those two things and it just becomes a suburb of Denim Springs ;)

Well I hit up the Gonzales gun show, wish I would have had more cash. Saw some nice rifles priced good compared to Virginia. Even saw a couple 66's and 28's priced reasonably. Then off to the cabella's, it was a nice afternoon. And I forgot about Sammy's will definitely be stopping by there for a po boy. And am going to try to go by the Kidd also, I am meeting an old military buddy towards the end of the week. He has never been down here and I know he would love to see it. Will let you guys know how things are going.

My wife and I enjoyed the Kidd tour in 2002. I even went to the movies with her to watch "Fat Greek Wedding". Ate at a chain sea food place. Only memories I have of the place.

Enjoy.

While the drivers around here are terrible, there are some good places to eat in Baton Rouge. I recommend Don's Seafood and Steakhouse and Brew-Bachers for a good burger. Hunan's offers the best Chinese in the state. Avoid the national chains. And as mentioned earlier, Jim's Firearms is a great gun shop. A great selection of both high end and affordable guns. Lot of Colts and S&Ws - used and new.
