No flames please as i am inquiring on behalf of friend of a friend.

Got a call from an old friend we used to be real close.... (oh, sorry got billy joel stuck in my head) :p

Got a call from a friend whose girlfriend has a M&P 9c and needs to adjust the rear sight.
She went to ACE Hardware and they were unable to provide a tool.
She called S&W and after being on hold for more than an hour she hung up.

So, thats the story.

What tool (and size) is required to adjust the rear sight on a M&P 9c.
A link to the tool would be great.
TIA

Thanks for the reply. The tool seems to be a basic allen wrench and if that is the case then why wouldn't ACE have it???
That just seems strange to me.

Yes from what I've read some are standard some a metric fits better. I thinkbecause its so small and oprobably high tolerence for less than perfection on this screw. Maybe a decent set of craftsmans would do it. I think you can still get the little bag of standard and a bag of metric for under $20. Or if you have a tool guy choose the one that fits best. Someone used a soldering iron to warm the loctite before trying to remove it and had good luck. Its a very small screw.

The Allen wrench required is a 1/16" size. ACE will have one, but likely only as part of a set.

Now, I'm going to take a guess...
You're friend's girlfriend is right handed and she is hitting off to the left and a little low.

Am I right?

Loosening the allen screw is the easy part.
You will also need a sight pusher or a good vice, brass drift punch, and hammer to move the sight. My 9fs required a pretty good pounding to make it move, actually bent the punch and I had to cut it and reshape the tip.
I've since bought a sight pusher to use when I put in the Apex kit, but its no piece of cake with that either. Some of these M&P sights are in super tight.
You might be better off to take the gun and a target to a gunsmith and get him to drift it for you.

You need a hex wrench of the proper size to loosen the little tiny set screw. You need a vise with padded jaws, a non-marring punch and a non-marring hammer. Adjustments are made for windage only. Move the sight in the direction you want your groups to move on the target. It is a trial and error process.

There are sight adjustment tools which clamp around the slide and you turn a handle and the device moves the sight. The problem with these is that the S&W are VERY tightly fitted, and often people do not have the hand strength to turn the adjustment knob or large adjustment handle or wing nut on these tools. In one extreme case, someone alleged in a thread on this Forum that such a tool required so much force that the rails were sheared off the slide. What you need to make some of those tools usable is something the equivalent in size and strength of a tire iron to get enough leverage!

S&W installs the sights in those dovetails with a machine. They are supposed to be very tight (and they are) in order to prevent rough handling from knocking them out of alignment.

An example of a sight adjustment tool is below.

Good luck.

I put my slide in a vise and tapped out the rear sight with a penny wrapped in blue tape on my FS. Pretty much planning on doing the same on the compact.
