I'm caring for my mom now who at 82 is suffering from cancer and early-moderate dimentia. I bring her dinner every night. All stuff she used to enjoy. Pizza(home made) shrimp, salmon along with whatever my wife is preparing. Mom is eating less and less. Hospice tells me that this is a normal condition with her illnesses. For some reason tonight, while trying to coax her to eat "just a little more", I got thinking of all the funny dishes she used to prepare for us that I Hated;)
-Stewed tomatoes
-Fried liver and onions (the worst lol)
-Beets
-tuna noodle casserole

what were yours:eek:

The Norwegian side of the family made all the kids eat a heaping helping of lutefisk at Christmas before they could open their presents. No wonder I grew up liking St. Patrick's day a whole lot better!

just did this for the mother in law last year.
man, it is spooky watching their heads go off the rails while the cancer has its way with the brain.
at one point before hospice, we got a call from the police who had us take her home.
She had wandered down the street and gotten into someone mini van where she sat for a good three hours till the owner decided to drop a dime for lack of knowing what else to do.... In her mind, she was taking a trip to Washington state.
yup, all the right elements for a horror story there, but still charming none the less ... Ill hold on to the charming account rather than the potential one. makes me smile, just a little

OK, I had to eat the absolute no.1 baddest stuff known to man when I was a kid. It was, and still mat be called, Instant Ralston. That wasn't really too bad but then there was the Chocolate Instant Ralston that would gag a maggot. But you know what?, I ate it, I lived, but I ain't gonna eat it again if'n I ain't gotta.
By the way, I love liver and onions. I don't care for beets. My Mom never made us eat anything if we really didn't like it unless that was al we had.
God bless America!!!!

I still consider liver and onions a real treat. We always had fresh liver and onions upon a successful hunt in elk camp. Itchy can't stand the smell, but she makes if for me occasionally. Reckon that is true love.

I even did the ol Injun and mountain man thing of eatin' some raw Buffler liver on a fresh kill to make "strong medicine" one time. I can say I've did it, but I ain't gonna do it again. I reckon I'll stick to muti-vitamins from now on.

I remember gaggin' on that chocolate Ralston goop too.

My Mom loved olives. She made us eat them too. Even today the smell of them things will send me runnin' for the throne.

My Mom was a great cook. Her dishes were generally simple, but the preparation was excellent. She spent a lot of time and invested a lot of effort in her meals, probably like a lot of moms did back then. But... once in a while... she would make... "stuffed mangos!"

Everyone seemed to like them but me. Just the sight of them nearly made me ill. :D

I would bet money that today I would like them. It is odd how your tastes change as you get older. Stuffed mango dinner always equaled peanut butter sandwich, for me. :)

This is fact. When I was a young-un my great-aunt served up a dinner of possum. Actually it wasn't a bad meal. Later, when I learned what I had eaten, I could never eat her cooking again.

We snuck the choc ralston out and gave it to the cat. Cat covered it up.
Yeah I know we are not supposed to use snuck.

As a kid it was spinach and beets.
Both are now tolerable to me.
I'm told that most kids hate okra, I love it fried, boiled or in gumbo. Another widely despised food that I love is headcheese!
I love tuna noodle casserole.
Edit: After reading Medxam's post I also have to add Spam to my hated list.

I just had liver and onions an hour ago. You mentioned hospice. What a bunch of angels. They were beyond helpful when my dad was in your mom's situation two years ago. Even came to the services.
Oh. The rotten food. My parents didn't go to church but made us kids go, but every Friday we ate some boring non meat "food". The worst was "Excrement on a shingle". A blob of some tuna stuff on toast. My mom was a great cook so this was an exception.

When I was a small boy at the end of the war my moms brother lived with us. She ran a country general store. One day he was cleaning out the ice cream freezer. He called me over and said here, kid. Ya wanna finish up this vanilla ice cream so I can throw out the can? He handed me a huge spoon full. I tackled it and it was cottage cheese! I was spitting and sputering and he was laughing. To this day I hate cottage cheese.
My dad was bad with craft dinner. He and mom worked opposite shifts and he would fix it. We had about the only verbal spatt I can remember over it. He was ordering me to eat it and no way would I. I still wont eat it. I will eat it if you mix some burger and tomattos and onions in it and like it!

My vote is for Split Pea Soup....Mother said it cured everything from flu to athelete's foot....miserable stuff
I'll handle all the liver n' onions, beets and brussel spruots you guy's don't want....love all that stuff

oh yeah forgot the head cheese that was nana's OUCH:eek: and mince( I thought it meant MINTS) pie. nanas too hahahaha

My Mom was the typical 60's stay at home wife. She would have dinner on the table every day at 5:30. Oh and you damn well better be there.

One dish she made was pork chops with onions and green peppers in some orange colored tomato sauce over white rice. My brother and I hated it and we would get sent out of the kitchen to our room when we refused to eat it. Today with adult taste buds it would probably be good.

The other was the loaf of spam with cloves in it baked in the oven. She always made baked beans, cooked apples and corn bread with it.

Once again would love it now but as a kid hated it..

My brother and I were not picky eaters. Now you bust up on her infamous meatloaf, mashed taters and rolls we would eat till we busted. My bro and I would fight over the bacon slices on top LOL

Sweetcorn, lima beans and fresh hanover tomato with ham... Ah man this thread is taking me back.

Mom is still alive but doing poorly. Dad passed in 2000. When I bring stuff like this thread up to her she just smiles.

Liver and onions the way she cooked it was better than steak. We all tour it up.....
