I noticed the last few times when I went into both WM and more so at Academy, that when they get 9MM--lately its been (mostly at Academy) just the 20 round boxes which IMO--priced way too high and im NOT buying 20 round boxes of hand gun ammo. At least WM here does still get 50 and 100 round boxes in. I just dont get the reasoning behind the 20 rd boxes?

Anyone else noticed that lately?

Thanks gents, now im learned. High end sounds good, but not at the money im making now.

Now, the ones I don't like are the 40-round boxes of .22LR ammo.

This "smells" too much like some marketing MBA's idea for maximizing short term profits by making it look like a less expensive product to the shoppers who don't realize that there is 20% less in the package.

Yeah, I do have an MBA myself, but I took the MBA Oath to conduct business in an ethical manner. :o MBA Oath

20 round boxes of pistol ammo are brought to you by the same marketing "wizards" that brought you the 4lb bag of sugar, and the 1.5 quart half gallon of ice cream.

Havent seen those yet.

20 rounds out to be adequate to get you through any gun fight a civilian is likely to be engaged in. We are supposed to be avoiding those situations.

OK, the 20 round boxes are most likely specialties, but buying a 20 round box of 9mm just doesn't feel right. Go through one and half mags and that's it.:(

One things for sure, they get no moolah from me for a mere 20 rounds. I can fair;y easily get the 9mm I want even if I have to buy more from Dick's.

20 rd. boxes are a way of getting you to buy ammo when you would pass due to sticker shock for 50 rds. of the same ammo. Just don't pick a fight with someone you'll have to shoot more than twenty times.

Im passing those up especially when they average 50 or more Cents per cartridge. If they were a buck or two cheaper? id buy.

The only ones im considering MAYBE buying--are the Ted Nugent ammo for Ammo collectors purposes.

Just like candy bars.....

Besides costing more, candy bars have been getting smaller and smaller.

I disagree with the adage to practice with what ammo you intend to use in a defense situation. Who can afford it?? Practice with ammo that has similar blast, velocity and recoil. Use part of that 20 round box for familiarization and save the rest for when it is needed.

This is exactly what I'm doing. :)

You can't protect yourself with just any ammo, you know. Gotta have that $1.50 a round stuff!

It's a Tactical Thing.

Since MOST SHOOTERS don't shoot Self Defense DESIGNATED AMMO on a regular basis, the Manufacturers figure we'll pony up the bucks for the top of the line SD ammo and shoot the cheaper stuff for fun 7 practice. Instead of packaging SD ammo in 50 count boxes and trying to sell them for $50 - $70 bucks, they package it in 20 round boxes and find that it suits most peoples budget. I guess it does work for THEM!

I believe this goes back to the late 80s or so when the mfgrs found they could load name brand bullets in hunting rifle factory ammo and charge several dollars more for a 20-round box. Overnight, the factory ammo with 'in-house' bullets (Core-Lokt, Power-Lokt, Silvertip, Power Point) that hunters had used for decades became 'practice' ammo. No longer any good for hunting, barely suitable for range work.

Now it's boutique HG and SG ammo. I believe one mfgr has THREE versions of the standard 12-gauge 9-pellet 00 buckshot load. And we now hear that the white box/ generic/ practice/ range /ball ammo may be of a lesser QC than the 'boutiques.' ("Let's crank out XXX million rounds of poor quality ball ammo. Like the ball ammo our military uses to protect our nation.") Couple years ago, I bought a 50-round white box of WW 230gr .45ACP JHP at the price of a 20-round 'boutique.' Tell me that ammo is any less good in my .45 derringers or revolvers.

Let me stop. Happy holiday season to all.

20 round boxes

Usually the explanation saying that the 20 round boxes contain specialty Self Defense loads in most of the available calibers is right on but I found .32 S&W Long WAD-CUTTERS in 20 round boxes at Academy Sports just last Saturday for $19.99/box. With the added tax it comes to more than a buck per round for target only ammo! You want it you pay for it must be their thinking!

I haven't bought a 20 round box of handgun ammo since, maybe, 2004.

50 rounds boxes of the exact same load are almost always available, with a small amount of looking, on the internet. Both my SD guns (.38 & .40) are loaded with top notch loads, that, in their 20 round civilian boxes, are well over $1.20 per round; but I purchased the same load in Law Enforcement 50 round boxes, for about $0.80 a round shipped.
