I have a Wheeler Engineering Armorers Vise for my AR and have been looking for something for my S&W M&P15-22. The only one I found was from Squirrel Daddy. It works well, but it has to be mounted in a shop vise, my shop vise is on the other side of the room, making it a bit inconvenient. The SD insert also allows the barrel to just hang with no support.

Suddenly, it dawned upon me to try & duplicate the M&P magazine profile on a Wheeler Mag Well vise block. It's only about $14 so I decided to try. It WORKS! The only thing you lose is the hammer stop.

I did all the work with a coping saw, a file, and a Dremel belt sander. I just matched the profile dimensions of the top portion of the S&W Magazine. The Mag hold/release slot is already molded into the Wheeler part! I'm thinking about filling some of the web hollows on the edges of the insert with epoxy. Some of the plastic got kind of thin during profiling.

Just be sure you clean up all of the plastic edges because you don't want any of that glass filled plastic floating around in your action.

What is this for? Clamping a 15-22 by anything besides the barrel is a bad idea of you're doing anything that will put torque on the barrel mounting points in the upper.

Cleaning, lubricating, moving the pivot pins back into position. Much easier to have it on a support.

I'm pretty sure it's just to secure the firearm while cleaning/general maintenance. Not for stuff like barrel/barrel nut removal. etc. Nice job, OP!

Thanks for the tip on the Squirrel Daddy. I've been looking for a vice block for the 15-22. :D

You can get the vise jaws and barrel nut wrench here
Barrel Vise Jaws and Barrel Nut Wrench (Pro) Combo for the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 – Tacticool22
We are the ones that invented both of those for the 15-22 commercial market

Those are great, but a mag well block would be helpful. If you had a bundle with vice block, barrel nut wrench along with a mag well block like Squirrel Daddy's I would add them to my cart and check out. Mag well block is nice for mounting in a vice for cleaning. :)
