I have been to three WalMarts and they are out of everything. I have only been able to find shot gun shells and a few box's of Blazer .9mm. No .40 or .38 special anywhere.

Panicky Pete bought it all. There are quite a few threads going about the current ammo shortage.

Here is one.

The ammunition supply got tight because of the military's demand for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also seems to me, from what I hear and read, that the troops are also getting a lot more small arms training and practice before deploying.

Then, we have the Obama factor. Most shooters believe that our new president will sign some bills into law that will greatly restrict gun ownership. The last 4 months have seen unprecedented sales of guns and ammunition. Folks are stocking up. People that have never owned guns are buying them because of the political threats on their gun rights.

It's a matter of supply and demand; reduced supply because of the war on terror coupled with increased demand because of the Democrats in Washington D.C.

handyman,

This post of mine is NOT meant to be facetious nor smarmy in any fashion so I hope you don't take it that way.

The reason there is a shortage of ammo right now is because Obama has recently been elected to office. To put it bluntly, people are panicking.Whenever a bad ice storm, etc is forecast for the area, everyone runs out and buys bread, milk and batteries (same principle).

The panic will end at some point and I'd recommend you "stock up"when it does.Having something on a shopping list is just empty air. It's far better to actually have it.

I haven't bought any ammo or components in years.I haven't needed to.

I hear you all loud and clear! I knew that people were panicing and buying up guns left and right, and I have purchased a bit of ammo since Obama came into office but it just seems like last week the supply ran dry. I had not heard of the up tick in millitary handgun training, that's some good info there! I guess I'll keep an eye for the restock and grab it when I can.

People are actually frightened about the economic downturn, and other events, as well as Obama. Border problems with Mexico, a possible upturn in violent robberies, etc... are also playing a role.

The military induced shortage was more to the point two years or so ago. The DoD is looking at budget cuts and a phased withdrawl from Iraq.

It is in my buddies closet. I have been in military arms room that are not nearly as well stocked as some of my friends since BHO got elected. I am just trying to buy a little here and there....when I can find it.

I was in the local WalMart this morning. I saw one box of Blazer 9mm ball but no counter person was handy. When I cam back later, you guessed it, it was gone.

I finally found a few box's yesterday. I got 4 box's of Blazer .9mm and four box's of Blazer .40cal. Of coarse I found them in two different stores. The guy that works the counter told me that he stocked 1100 round of each .40, .9mm and .38 special at the end of last week and all of it is gone as of yesterday. People are definitely freaked out right now. STOP FREAKING OUT..... I don't like (can't afford) to buy hundreds of dollars worth of ammo at one time.

It gets better-

A buddy of mine just called to tell me his Wal-Mart has now posted a "limit" per customer for ammo. Great....

I've been doing my part since 2005 to stockpile. I shot at least once a month (300-500 rounds per range visit). I've been stockpiling ammo to avoid the massive price increases that have hit. Have not been buying ammo lately.

I can tell you I made a trip to Ganger Mountain and Dick's today with negative results for stocked pistol ammo (38, 9mm, 40 and 45). Plenty of rifle and shotgun rounds. The local gun store told me they can't keep it...it sells fast. FWIW, I never noticed such a shortage before the election.

I was in Gander Mountain today and their prices are friggin crazy. Winchester white box 100 count in .40 is 49.99. Blazer 50 count in .40 and .9mm is 22.00. They are out of their minds!

Two things you can count on regarding ammo over the next 18 to 24 months:

1. Prices will keep going up.

2. Supply will keep going down.

Proceed accordingly.

Same here thought it was just a CA thing seems like this all over. I will surely stock up next time I find some 40 cal.

If you can, look at more than one Walmart. I was in one that had no ammo, while one 4 miles away, and out of the prime shopping district, had 20+ boxes of Blazer Brass .40S&W for $12.49/box.

I got a 1000 round case of PMC 9x19 for $209 at the Columbia gun show today.

Reload-Reload-Reload ammo here in N.W. Ohio is the same as everywhere else. There is none! Reloading supplies, while not plentiful are available, even primers if you look a little. I see people on the auction sites paying $40 plus a thousand for primers. I'm still paying $28-$32.
