Which aftermarket grip...

I want to add an aftermarket grip to my M&P Shield 9mm, but I want to see which one (of the two that I am looking at) others are using, and why they chose that particular one over the other.

The two that I am looking at are the Talon grips (not sure which one yet (sand paper or rubber texture) and the Pachmayr grip. I am leaning towards the Pachmayr because it seems as though it would add a little girth to the grip, but I am reading enough reviews saying that it slips, which is shying me away from it.

If you use the Talon grips, which one and why did you choose that grip? How are you liking it so far?

If you chose the Pachmayr grip, how do you like it so far, and why did you choose it?

I put the rubber Talon grips on all my handguns and wish I had done it sooner. It's really up to you in the end.

I have the Talons on several handguns and I really like them. Not sure exactly what you are hoping to accomplish but the reason I like the Talons is they provide me with a better grip without adding any bulk or changing the ergonomics and they don't move around like any of the slip on grips. I prefer the rubber version since I do tend to carry the pistols that they are installed on and I don't like the sandpaper as it tends to be a little rough on my clothing and my love handles.

Hogue beavertail

Not one of your options, but I'm using the Hogue grip with the beaver-tail. I have large hands and the Talons don't help with that IMO. Plus I don't need the anxiety of trying to get those things on just right. I have Pachmeyers on another gun I have, and I like them well enough.

+1 Hogue. Have standard one on my 9mm and the beaver tail on the 45. Both add extra girth to the grip that is perfect for me.

I took a look at the Hogue and it is now the front runner...

From reading reviews, I do not get the impression that it moves, plus it seems to make the grip a little bulkier, which is what I am looking for. And, another plus, it is a dollar or two cheaper than the other two...

None of these choices is overly expensive and all are easily removed. It's hard to make such a personal choice relying on others' opinions whose needs may be different.

My Shields are for concealed carry when I don't carry a bigger gun, so I don't want to increase the size of the grip. If you can improve the grip texture, you may find you don't need to increase the grip size.

Rubber Talons have worked for me, but they will start peeling with heavy use or after a year or so. The Hogues and Pachmyrs I have tried on other guns increased size, slipped (because of assertive mag insertions), were tough to get on, and were sufficiently tacky that my covering garment hung up on them. All in all, too many negatives for me.

As always, your needs and experience may differ.

I have Hogue grip sleeves on both my Shields but as one poster said it does sometimes "catch" on clothing due to the tackiness of the rubber.

Tried both Hogue and Pachmayr but ended up using a bicycle inner tube. That just works best for me...........

How about a FREE used bike inner tube picked up at any bike shop in the junk pile . You might stretch a 1.75" on as it works on 9mm and 40sw kahrs but a 2"/2.25" may work well . Have enough to give some to any friends with small single stacks too . Cut to cover as much grip as possible and even add layers to build if needed at least during that owner brake in time !! Many of use older shooters have used them for years .

Rubber Talons on my Shield. I also have them on my Springfield XDM for the past 2 years and no issues with em peeling. This gun is used quite a bit. Just be careful with the gun solvents and they'll be fine.

I prefer the hogue. Definitely tough to get on, but it isn't going anywhere once it's on

I tried the Hogue grips on my Shield 40, and found them slipping off in an IDPA Match, preventing a solid mag change. I had on for about 3 weeks before the match. After them slipping down, I removed it after the match, not wanting a bad mag exchange due to after grips!!

I tried the Hogue beaver tail grip on the Shield I didn't like the finger grooves . YMMV . I still have it . Was a major pain to get it on .

I had the same experience at two different IDPA matches 15 years ago with two different Hogue Handalls.

If it slips on (even if difficult), any aftermarket grip sleeve, including an inner tube, can slip down and interfere with the mag well. There is no possibility of this happening with Talons or other adhesive wrapped grip enhancements, including the A-Grip which I have also used on a few guns.

I know, rubber grip sleeves don't slip down for some people. They may run their guns differently than I run mine. However, if there is the potential for this to happen, I avoid it.
