I usually carry a 2" M60, and for whatever reason, if I feel the need for a .357 I will carry my 3" M65. I do not use a .357 to carry .38 Spl. loads in. It makes little sense to me to carry extra weight and bulk to use a .38 spl. load in a heavier .357 gun. Some will say it is easier to control a less powerful round in a larger gun..........true, but to me that says there was not enough practice time put in with a lighter gun. Shooting even stiff +P loads in an all steel J-frame can be quickly mastered, it just takes a bit of practice.
My mantra has always been to carry the smallest and least bulky gun that will shoot the load I want to carry, and that I can proficiently control. I learned this when I first started carrying 32 years ago. I was big into the "gun magazines" back then, and all the gun writers were basically saying that you weren't a real man if you didn't carry a full sized 1911 .45 ACP. Being a newbie at that time, I went out and bought a Colt 1911 and after a few weeks and a few holsters later, I decided that the 1911 was just not a gun I could CCW 10 hours a day! That's when I got acquainted with the S&W J-Frames revolvers and I have been a Happy Camper every since!
