Not an S&W AR, but a Bushmaster V-Match with a Leupold Vari-X III 1.75-6Ex32, mounted with a LaRue QD. I believe this is the optimal rig for mid-range 5.56 shooting. In the back ground is an FN SPR in 308, w/Leupold Mk 4. Both are extreme tack drivers.

I like to keep it simple.

I want irons in case my optics fail. Even if it's just out hunting coyote's. At least I'd still have my irons if needed.

Honestly, with my Nikon M223 mounted I really don't use my BUIS. I have had them on and off and would not have invested in them IF this had been my first configuration. I replaced a Strikefire red dot with the Nikon M223 1-4 and am very satisfied with the scope and it's versatility for close work AND mid range distance shooting. Not alot to go wrong with it, totally mechanical and anything damaging it would probably effect the whole rifle negatively.

That said, I have re mounted my Troy BUIS just so they don't get lost in a drawer. IF I was depending on my AR for combat, I would definitely want the extra comfort of the backups but think most are just extra weight with a non electronic scope.

Optics without batteries really should not need BUIS. If it comes down to it you might need a back-up gun. Battery change drills should be a part of any training when using battery powered optics, just like we do with NVG's. In the late 70's/early 80's it was a little more critical with AN/PVS-5's.

My sport with a rra freefloat tube and mount. Scope is an old 2.5-10 bushnell.

For most of us the most hostile element our AR's will ever confront is getting scratched in the cheap cardboard box on the drive home from the dealer. Im not planning on joining 1st SFOD-D or going varmint hunting in Afghanistan, so if the scope fails on my range queen gun I just shoot something else.

Nothing wrong with backups, but the gun must fit the mission not the other way 'round.
