I looked at an 04 Volvo S60 2.5 turbo auto trans with 139k miles for $3200. It has power everything, sunroof, leather, pretty new tires, timing belt changed at 110k miles. The car looks to be in great shape. Trans oil pan had a drip, otherwise no fluid leaks and fluids looked good. I don't know anyone who drives a Volvo. I did some research on the web and found tons of good reviews for used Volvo's. Anyone here have any experience with them? Are they as reliable as I'm lead to believe?

For safety they are non-pareil. Maintenance not so much. Expect to spend $800-1200 per year to keep it on the road. Outside of the dealer network, shops that can (or will) work on Volvos are few and far between and the ones that specialize are pricey. The 2.5T S60 is a pretty nice car with performance and handling not usually seen in a sedan. 2004 is getting to be old technology and you would probably do better to look for something newer. At the price point the one you are looking at is at the top of the retail market, you may want to try to negotiate. This model was also available in an AWD version, depending on where you live that may be a consideration.

I agree with Speedgunner. Mine was very high maintenance - a pretty nice car, but just not worth the cost.
I have switched to buying used MB still costly to maintain, but FAR better cars and worth every penny in my opinion.

Volvos have been my every day carriages for about 30 years. I'm currently driving a '99 S70 turbo, and the wife has an '05 V70 2wd wagon. Both are worked on by local indy mechanic; all the manuals are online if needed. I get some parts from the dealer 100+ miles away, but most of the maintenance or upgrade stuff comes from aftermarket online shops such as IPD or FCP. While I doubt that I'll get the 300,000+ miles I got out of a couple of earlier models, or the 600,000+ miles my daughter got out of an '81 Volvo 240, I'm happy and don't spend more on maintenance and repairs than if I had some other cars.
Turbos can be a pain in the butt warming up--before I retired, wintertime warm-up took longer than the drive to work.

I've been driving my '05 S40 T5 AWD since new. 158,000 and still running strong. The S60 is a better built car than my S40, if it looks good I would take a chance.

I've owned a couple and was fortunate that a local mechanic specialized in Volvo's. I was also fortunate that he allowed me to scrounge for parts in his used parts bin. He had a lot of various stuff available and made it easy to do minor repairs myself.

I agree with the other comments that maintenance costs are high. You should also search for common problems that may affect the model you're looking at. One of the models I owned had common transmission problems. That can get very expensive. They were both quirky. One had power windows that had a tendency to fall out of the tracks and I got good at repairing them. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Lots of good info already. Thanks a lot everyone. I always do my own repairs. Been doing it for years on everything I've owned. I figured parts wouldn't be cheap for a car like this. I'm gonna think about it. It's at a used car lot. Dealer says he's firm on the price, but if I decide to buy, I'll make a lower offer. And I'll also need a Carfax on it. It is a bit intimidating with all those gadgets and gizmos. I mean, it's got a button to lower the rear headrests, for crying out loud. But it is in real nice shape. I've driven a lot worse cars for many many miles.

As the world turns... Just found out today my employer will be downsizing. So its an easy decision to make. Not gonna spend any $$ on anything right now. But, I appreciate all the feedback. After I know whats going on at work, I'll get back to the used car shopping. Thanks, again

Don't want to be a smart *** here, but do you really want to take on 12 year old ride with 139,000 miles on it. I don't know a hell of a lot about cars, but I've got to wonder if any car with high millage really owes the owner anything.

I've driven 3 different vehicles to over 200k miles. My current vehicle is an F150 I bought with 130k miles. I'm sure it'll go well over 200k if its maintained. Everyone's different. Some people keep buying brand new so they never have to worry. Some people buy used and don't mind doing their own work to save money. What ever fits your taste and budget.
