Why are 586-5s so hard to find?

What makes the 586-5 so uniquely qualified for IDPA shooting? I use some older 586 no dash models without any problems.

What's different between a -4 and -5?

The -5 was a contract run for Brazil in 38 Special.

It's not that the -5 is uniquely qualified for IDPA, it's just that the -5 has some improvements the previous versions don't: new style rear sight, reinforced frame, slightly better build quality (of those I've seen).

Based on what I find in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, Third Edition, page 249, I BELIEVE you are referring to the S&W Model 586-4.

IT is supposed to have, as opposed to the previous models of the 586, a drilled and tapped frame, synthetic grips, a changed rear sight and a changed extractor.

+1 on that- my 586-4 has exactly those changes as well as the RB. Further, I believe that is when S&W started using CNC rifling instead of the older style with square edged grooves and lands.
