Why are Cabella's gun prices so high?

I went in over Thanksgiving and couldn't believe how high their prices were on used guns! I watch for guns all the time and think they are overpriced. Why - what's with them?

Crazy, isn't it. I've actually seen used guns priced the same and higher than a new one of the same model, in the next case over. I think they slap a certain percentage on top of whatever it cost them to take the used gun in no matter what they paid.

Cabela's prices on most everything are high. Look around the store. You have to pay for all that overhead somehow.

Big box gun stores = big gun prices... How anyone buys a gun at Gander, or Cabelas is a mystery to me. I've heard of some used gun 'finds' (decent prices), but in general, all I see is high prices.

A friend of mine and a regular poster here works there and I am sure he will chime in. I have seen some prices I thought on the high side, but I have also seen some great bargains.

Cabela's is an interesting place to shop and lousy place to buy. I often check their gun counter out but wouldn't think of buying from them.

I remember Cabela's from when they were a little tiny outlet store in downtown Sidney. They had a decent mail order business which made lots of opportunities for deals in the "bargain basement". I bought lots of stuff from them. It was good equipment and sold for a fair price. Now they are the WalMart of sporting goods stores and I seldom shop them anymore. It's even less often that I would actually give them money.

They have purchased 2 rifles from me at gun shows. They're buyer never tried to talk the price down I had on the tags.
Neither rifle had any serious lookers or offers at the tag prices for the 2 shows prior that I had them out at,,of course the 'low ballers' were out in force!

They paid in cash,,w/an FFL license copy.
I'm guessing they'd have to put at least an extra 50% mark up on the price they paid me when they sell,, it if not more.

One rifle was a Lee Speed Sporter and my price wasn't cheap to begin with!
They must find buyers somewhere.

I am by no means an advocate of Cabela's. I actually deplore some of their marketing practices. However I have bought a few rifles from their new store in Wheeling, WV. Including a very nice Kimber Long Master Classic. Along with a nice used Weatherby. They will negotiate on their prices on all their firearms, but alot of people are afraid to ask because they are a large retailer. Just take the used rifle to the manager and point out the flaws that you believe should make the price lower. They will lower their price. And occasionally they have some blow out sales on new rifles that are way below normal prices. My friend bought two camo ADL's with a cheap scope on top for $389 a piece. That was a steal of a deal. Negotiate with them. Tom.

They sell them at the price they are asking. If people didn't pay their inflated prices they wouldn't be so high

How can people dicker at the local shop, and not dicker when the price is higher at a "chain" store?

I don't even know how Walmart even sells guns anymore with the high prices they want for such basic pieces? Of course, there are plenty of local gun shops that have more than exorbitant prices too.

Buyer beware- at all shops. ;)

I've only bought one used gun from Cabela's, and that was a few months ago. I thought it was a tad on the high side, but the rifle, a Winchester M70 Heavy Varmint in .222, was chambered in a fairly uncommon caliber, so I bought it. I asked about trading a rifle I have no interest in, an as new, if not new, Winchester Model 100 carbine in .308. I thought they offered me a pretty fair trade on the rifle, but I wanted a bit more and just bought the M70 outright.

I joined the Cabela's Club. That means that you get a Cabela's Visa. It also means that you get email offers that are good sometimes. They sent me a cash card that would be activated for $150 if I spent over $500. I did the math and bought a Henry Big Boy 45 Colt for $699. If you take off the $150 then I got a good price. I spent the $150 on reloading components that I would have eventually needed anyway. I usually only buy stuff there when it is on sale.

Sometimes they have good prices on stuff but most time they are way high. I'm not anywhere near a Cabelas so I only stop when passing by one when traveling. The Grand Junction store had screaming deals on Nosler .44 and .45 bullets so I bought several boxes. Their price was lower than dealer prices and several years ago I got a great price on a like new S&W M25 no dash.

Like any store there are deals to be found but not all the time. The bargain cave is getting to be a joke. Used to be some good deals but haven't seen anything for a while.

I love Cabela's... they overpay for my guns and undersell the ones that I want.... Seriously.

I've found more bargains there than anywhere else. I've also found employee's workin' the Gun Libraries that haven't a clue about what they're handlin' short of the Blue Book and what they look up on the Internet.

It's Paradise for a seasoned gun nut!....;)

Cabela's will dicker. They won't move much on a new listing in the gun library, but after it has been there a while they will listen to offers. I know a couple of people who have come out of Cabela's negotiations with nice guns at reasonable prices.

Also, Cabela's is known to knock their own prices down some if there is no interest in a particular gun. I have seen some pre-war classics get almost affordable before the dickering even began.

I got a collector grade H&R M1 from the CMP for $1400, sold it to Cabela's in Richfield Wi for $1700 and they have been trying to sell it for $3000. Every thing I have looked a has been to high for me. I did buy a pre mdl 19 from them that was a little over priced but I wanted it and had the money.

Yes, they are priced high most of the time on their used stuff. However, since they handle such a large volume, they don't always appraise them properly and one can find a good deal periodically.

Bought a used 12 ga. Winchester 1897 pump at the "gun library" last summer. Actually at the gun library "dump this piece of junk" rack sitting outside the front doors of the offical "gun library". Shows honest use but not too beat up, for $250. Had a busted WRA hard rubber butt plate that I can replace with a repro for $15. Going to chop that crazy long barrel down to 20" and put on a bead. Will make a cool "old days" riot gun. My problem is they lost my paperwork when I went back to pick the gun up (had put it on lay-a-way). Took them over an hour and a half to just find the gun and to search out the paperwork. I think the price of used long guns, especially shotguns, arn't too bad. Its their used handguns that are really crazy. Used West German Army Surplus Walther P-1/P-38's for $650? Any G.I. .45 with US property marks are a minimum of $1500, no matter if its a 1950's rework.
