Why do we have school shootings?

I am a retired elementary principal... I agree with everything in your post... but I also want to point out that most of these shootings have been performed by young men or teen age boys with issues or emotional disorders. We as a nation, the government, needs to spend more energy on curing mental illness.

Schools & malls are easy targets, no gun zones. When I was growing up I carried a pocket knife every day, including at school. It was common to see shotguns in truck rifle racks. In fact, at least until the early 80's it was still common to see guns in the racks of pickups parked in high school parking lots. I don't remember hearing about many shootings back then.

I graduated in 2008 and even though it was against the law quite a few guys who lived out in the country (which in the town I lived in the ' country ' was across the street from the school) had guns in their trucks and cars. They would go pheasant hunting before school. Not one shooting the 4 years I was there.

The night this shooting happened nearby me in sandy hook i told the misses i had a gut feeling there was a shooting game on the net about shooting childern. The NRA found it the other day. I have never seen it nor will i post the name of it. To me its a very sad day in USA for having shuch a game available to us on the net.

Plus these dad's don't get involved with there kids enough. Thats one problem too. My dad left my mom when i was 15yo but i realized i had to do it for myself and no one was giving me a free ride so i quite school and went to work being tired of taking back 5 cent bottles for a loaf of bread. Its simple you work, you eat and pay your bills. Only you can change your life. The thought of going out and hurting people was never in my mind. My point is why do these people want to go out and hurt other people? These kids should be taught the future will happen for you as you get older your life will come together like a puzzle and things will workout.

Some how these senceless shootings have got to stop. I pin it on the violent video games were simple minds get reality and the game mixed up. Then there is the violence on TV everynight and in most of the movies too. Do we as honest gun owners really accept this over the top violence in everthing we watch?

We as a society have got to change. We need a better way of doing background checks for nut cases and weed out the bad guys.

I carry a 1 1/2" pocket knife to peel apples when i eat them and in a state building with a metal dector i was threatened with jail time over it. I'm the third generation Italian here in my family. My people were boat builders and grape smashers so do i look like a terrorist I think not i love america.

Godbless, Bill

BTW; I'm 62yo and retired as we grew up together as a family either me or my wife or both of us were there with my childern most of the time we were involved with them. With todays times when both parents work or are seperated its hard on the kids. They need special attention than normal families when the parents are together. The kids need to know there loved too all of them.

Because they want to go in a blaze of glory, and there is a lot of firewood in schools and other unprotected places.

I agree with the above statements, however I will add another contributing factor. How often was in when you were younger that you were bullied? Did you stand up to him/her? I was bullied when I was in school and when it got to a certain point, it came to blows. The bullying stopped. Children these days are taught to talk about their feelings. If you don't like what somebody is doing to you, talk to them about it. More often than not, this mentality doesn't work and it teaches our children that it's unacceptable to stand up for yourself. Eventually, that uncontrolled bullying turns in emotional rage. Then you have extreme violence.

I'm not saying physical altercations are the right way to handle everything, but there are times when it is called for. But, there are times when there are no alternatives.

You are very right, I grew up in that era, to bad it did not continue with every other generation. Parents need to be accountable for their children to teach them instead of society, not just providers of their needs.

Us blaming movies and video games is no different then the gun grabbers blaming the guns. Thousands of kids play violent video games and watch violent movies on a daily basis yet we don't have sandy hook shootings on a daily basis. I noticed you said "simple minds" but there is no line to draw that would determine who may or may not be influenced by movies/games so they would just curb all of it across the board like they are trying with guns. Im 35 now Ive played video games since I was 9 and all of the most violent ones that have ever come out and granted I do not suffer from any mental disabilities or anything like that but Ive never had the urge to kill people over what Ive watched for movies or played for games in the past.
