"Wildflower" - an Engraved 357 Magnum

I am in awe...but also a little puzzled. Is the fact that an action job was done, by a pro, an indication that you intend to shoot this work of art? Or that something otherwise perfect deserves the perfect action even if no mortal is ever allowed to caress the trigger? Inquiring minds want to know.

I think Richard will be voted "Best Dressed" if and when SHTF!

As an aside, I'm assuming the original finish is stripped---as opposed to polished off-----yes??

As yet another aside, I'm told the factory routinely strips the original finish on refinish jobs, and if/when no damage to the base metal is evident, no (or very little) polishing is required---yes??

Ralph - thanks for your kind comments and thoughtful questions. The answer to your first question is "yes" and "I think so" to the second question. Engravers I am familiar with usually strip the gun of the blue before engraving it. There is invariably some polishing required, (i) before engraving - to remove roll marks and any blemishes and to prepare the gun to be engraved - some engravers rough the surface just a bit so that it will take the ink or whatever they use to layout the engraving pattern, (ii) during engraving - after inlaying line work or to take off the engraving burrs, and (iii) a final buff and polish prior to re-bluing.

Here is a photo of this gun when the roll marks were removed from the right side with some vudoo engraver magic:

... and one after the gold had been inlaid on the cylinder, but prior to being engraved:

Hope these photos are helpful.:)

Simply magnificent Richard. Whenever I click on one of your posts I feel the need to pull out a thesaurus. I know in advance that I will run out of superlatives to describe what lies within.

We have similar tastes in grips and grip makers as well. I also have a pair from Keith in the works with Ebony accents.

All the best, Bob.

Bob:

I am looking forward to seeing those grips. I also am looking forward to once again seeing that ebony set that you have with the ivory diamonds.:)

I've learned something of note here, and given it a bit of thought, it makes sense. I didn't dwell on it, but I've decided it makes A LOT of sense!

I knew Richard had some items he'd had done from the get-go. I supposed they were the few among the many. Now I'm thinking they're quite possibly, and maybe even likely a whole lot more than a few---and I thought about that----and the more I thought about it the more sense it made.

The vast majority of the rest of us spend a good deal of time running around like chickens with their heads cut off going to auctions, shows, dealers, and other favorite haunts looking for something that strikes our fancy-----or comes close enough. (And if you've never seen the antics of a chicken with its head cut off, it's a sight to behold---and avoid by doing it right the first time. (Doing it right is hanging the chicken(s) upside down on the clothes line, and then go down the line removing the heads. Then go back down the line, and remove the chickens. (You do know what a clothes line is don't you---never mind it ain't likely you've seen one lately?)

That's one way. Now I'm thinking Richard doesn't do that sort of thing much. I'm thinking he decides what he wants----EXACTLY what he wants, and (figuratively speaking) picks up the phone, orders it up, and gets EXACTLY what he wants! Judging from these few photos of the work in progress, he even gets to watch the process!

All this strikes me as very effective time management----and pretty much guarandamnteed results!!
