The past few Saturday mornings my boys and I have been putting up portable deer stands or cleaning up and around permanent stands. My wife, the photographer, has gone a couple of times with us so she can wonder off in the woods with her camera and take pictures.
At the last outing she said she'd picked out a spot where she wanted her own game blind. She said she found a spot about 200 yards from where we were cleaning up around a deer stand and it was next to a creek on the edge of a large hardwood stand and a natural meadow. I went and looked over the spot and told her I'd fix her up.
I went to see my buddy who owns a welding shop and makes deer stands this time of year and had a couple of dozen for sale. I took a look at what he had and liked them but they were all 10, 12, or 15 feet tall. I told him I was wanting this one for my wife and why, and I wanted one only 6 feet to the deck. He said if I'd come back the next day he'd have one ready for me. He called me back the next day around noon and said not only did he have one made for me he'd already delivered it to my house.
After I got home from work I made a run to the local hardware store and picked up some camo spray paint, plywood, and some other hardware I needed to trim out the stand. This morning my youngest son and I loaded it up in the trailer. My wife jointed us as we hauled it as close as we could get to the spot she'd picked out with the truck, then man-handled it in the rest of the way. We got it set up, leveled off, and staked down. After we set it up, I went out across the meadow about 75 yards and hung a PVC gravity fed deer feeder from the limb of a hickory tree.
I put a three legged camp stool in it for her to perch on and she said she wanted to try it out. My son and I left her there with her camera as we hiked back to the truck to go fix a gate hinge we noticed needing repaired from the last trip and told her we'd be back in about 30 minutes. We came back about 45 minutes later and picked her up and she was pretty excited saying she'd already gotten some good pictures . . . I posted one of them below.
