I have a very new acquaintance that lives in or near Wilkes Barre PA. She is starting to dispose of her late husbands 40 year collection of guns, knives and Zippo lighters.
I am in Iowa and of very little help to her. Is there a reputable auction house or dealer that I can recommend to her in that area to help sell his collection? I would hope someone that would not take advantage of her situation.
Any help would be appreciated. JA

40 year old collection? Most gun shops will see $$$$$$.

I don't know how large the collection is but if you can list it here some of us may be able to help. Everyone here is into a little bit of everything.

I know of a place down by Philadelphia but that's a 2hr drive

Thanks Arik

I do not know anything about the collection. She did say she had a friend of her late husband help her sell off some of the long guns already. But he has not been around to help of late. And she has no knowledge of handguns.
No idea what the situation is. Or specifics of collection. Just trying to give her options.
I know my wife will have trouble deciding how to liquidate my meager collection when I am gone. Two sons to pick what they want and the rest will be sold. Hopefully not for a long time to come. ;) JA

Can she take a photo (photos) of the pieces so we can at least help to id some of them for her? She definitely needs some help to get a baseline idea of what she has. With a rough list of those items, she can have someone check out what they are going for these days on various gun dealer sights off the web and can help prevent from getting totally ripped off.

When my dad passed & we had an estate sale I found out the hard way just how eager (and quick) some vultures are to take advantage of these situations (in my case it wasn't over firearms, just a few antiques).

This lady definitely needs some help & we've got plenty of guns & knives folks here, and a few Zippo aficionados.

Does she have an inventory list? Is it mostly Colts, S&W's or what? Our forum leader, Lee Jarett does travel for collections as well as others (like David Carroll) if the inventory justifies. I live about an hour away and might be able to help.

Bob

Depending on what the knives are, a call to the NKCA (National Knife Collectors Assn.) might be in order. Someone there should be able to put her in contact with someone local to her area.

This isn't an auction but Heberlings Sport Shop in Prompton, Pa., near Honesdale is honest and only charges 10 per cent on consignments. Ask for Gus, the owner.

I sent you a PM.

Selling off a lot of guns is a lot of work, done best by someone who knows what they are doing. Any FFL or auctioneer is going to be doing so to make a living. So forget about getting retail values for such a collection.

There are some fairly large FFL dealers in Penn. that might sell the collection on assignment for say a ten percent seller fee (I am guessing here as I have never sold guns that way). The only one I know of there that I have dealt with is Sportsmanssupply, in Butler, PA. They were active on Auction Arms the last time I dealt with them and they are a first rate outfit as a seller.

Other than that I don’t know too much about Penn. Other than once you get out of the big cities, they are not too different from Texans outside of Houston and Austin.

Follow up as such as it is

Thank you for all of the suggestions and ideas. And jackvs1 thank you for the PM. I passed the information on to the acquaintance and have not had a response back. When and if I do I will update this thread. Thanks to all. JA

I agree -- a very honest man with an old fashioned shop and shooting range.
