Does anyone else look at "trash" a little differently given our hobby?

I don't see an empty plastic milk jug - I see a plastic jug filled with water exploding after I've hit it with a hollow point. I don't see a wooden cutting board that needs to be thrown out - I see some wood and wonder what will happen to it if I put it at the business end of some bullets.

When it comes time to throw something out or put it in the recycle bin - I first ask myself "Would this be fun at the range?". If the answer is "yes" - it gets set aside for the next range trip.

This reminds of a "bit" David Letterman used to do: Will It Blend? He'd put various things in a blender and it had to be guessed whether the material could be blended.

For me it's "Will it target?" (Just this morning I had to put a pillow in the trash. When I asked "Will it target?" the answer came back "No." - so it went directly into the trash bin. :-))

The outdoor range.....

The outdoor range I go to doesn't allow 'active' targets because the slobs that frequent the place never clean up their mess. This, I believe, is crud."

But I like gallon jugs and 16 oz bottles full of water. You KNOW if you hit the target or not. Or do like Hickok45 and use orange soda bottles that run around after you hit them and try to finish them off. I have a tasteless name for this game but it's a little too tasteless to post. PM me if you want to know what I call it.:D

Oh boy!

Cardboard, bigger the better. Milk jugs. Pieces of wood. Cans. Lady down the road saves me her big plastic cat liter tubs. And my favorite, 3.5 pound plastic pretzel jugs from Costco, fill it up with water, drill a hole in the hard plastic screw on lid, pull a tire valve thru it and a little air in, then blow it up with a 12 ga. slug. Just good clean fun at the log pile. Also clean up after every time. Always have some brush needs burning.

The ranges I belong to don't mind if you shoot "some" of these targets, PROVIDED you pick up every scrap and take it home with you. Any violations and you are no longer a member of those ranges, and I don't blame them. There are some shooters that should never be allowed to have a firearm with the attitude they have.

Yep - cleanup is critical. Members are very good about cleaning up. Do people get every scrap? No - but it hasn't escalated into a serious issue. The range also holds monthly cleanup sessions where members are to come and help do improvements, maintenance and more thorough cleaning.

Always on the lookout for cardboard of quality-- that is all at my nearest range. Have a country range that belongs to a buddy but we always pick up the jugs etc. when we use them :) Stay neat! :D

I had a friend that invented a related sport "Womping Rocks!" He would gather rocks a little bigger than a softball. When shooting on privet land, he would set them in the 300 to 500 yard range at unknown ranges. the object was to turn big rocks into little rocks (for the good of the soil, of course). The guys shooting 6 BR with slow but accurate 105's would knock off thumb sized pieces. My 22 BR with a fast and accurate 50 grain bullet turned the rock into gravel in one shot. I was considered the party pooper and was not allowed to join in until everyone else had missed at least once. Still, it is lots of fun.

If you try this, put a hill or mountain in as a back stop!

I save the cardboard separators from the 24 packs of soft drinks. They are a perfect size for either indoor or outdoor ranges and already have the little circles on them.

Pizza Box

We sometimes buy Hunt Brothers Pizza from a convenience store here. The pizza is pretty good. Found this on the back of the box.

Back where i shoot (friends gravel pit), anything that
is burnable is fair game. And cans of all types. Just have
to pick those up.
Funny you should mention targets in trash as this year
i bought waaaaay more pumpkins than we needed at
Halloween time. They are fun to shoot and biodegradable.

I agree, they are great. Now that is a company that knows its customer base. They always show up before hunting season. Sighting in and pizza! Great combo

The range I go to you can only use paper targets and no silhouette's unless you cut off the head.

Oh how I miss shooting at the county dump.......Back then nothing was buried, just pushed into big piles with bull dozers. GLASS botttles was the favored target.....Unless you were participating in a RAT shoot.......Now empty plastic oil cans/clay birds/hanging steel/hanging tennis balls adorn my range.

Ha, and here I thought I was the only one that does that. I have an old dump on my property and there are lots of goodies to shoot. I found a bowling ball once and shot it with a 3" 12 ga. slug. Loved it. Computer monitors blow pretty good. Toasters are nice as well as corded telephones. I still buy targets though every time I get a chance. I like the way you think OP!

Our City charges a Permit Fee to garbage pick because a lot of Pickers just threw things around and took what They wanted and left a big mess for the Home Owner to clean up.

I like beer cans. The country roads here in far west Texas yield an endless supply of them. I can really make them move when hit with a 38 Special wadcutter. My gane is usually to shoot at them until they're so far away that I can't copnnect with a magazine or cylinder full. The shattered remains go into recycle.

I've recently tried this plastic thingy. It moves well, even when hit with a 22 LR (shorts...not so good), although mostly I;ve shot it with 38 Special wadcutters. It seems to be indestructable: the bullets just make a mark and don't enter. I don't hear any ricochets either, so I don't know where the bullets go.
