Hey, that's my load. Give it back!

I usually use HP-38, Unique, or Trail Boss, but I just bought a pound of Universal to try out on the recommendation of some friends on another board. It'll be a few weeks before I load some more.

I also use W231 for 9mm, .38 Spl and 45 ACP loads especially for IDPA.

I find it meters well and makes an accurate load.

I used Unique for many years so to me W231 is very clean

Good powder, but very dirty, especially with light to medium loads. Not so bad on upper end loads.

A few years ago, I loaded some light steel loads with 231. I've noticed the same thing. Light loads are very dirty, but with firm loads, it's not bad. I ended up with all kinds of unburned powder getting under the extractor which gummed up my speed loads. That wasn't a problem with the more firm loads.

I found 231 to burn dirty, especially in light loads.

One interesting thing an old timer told me about when I first starting shooting and loading for PPC was the compatibility volume-wise between 231 and Bullseye. Take it for what it's worth and what you paid for it, but I have checked the loading manual recommendations and find the comparisons are valid.

You can leave your powder measure set for your favorite charge of Bullseye and pour in 231 instead - you'll get the same volume, the charge weight will be slightly different, but the velocities and pressures should run about the same. One of the very few powder combinations I've been aware of in over 30 years of reloading that seem to be interchangeable in 38 target loads.

I use 231 for 45 acp and found it to be accurate with lead bullets, didn't really find it as dirty as WWB factory from walmart.

All I can say, great minds think alike.

There is a reason so many shooters use that load, it works!

Right now I am working on a light .38 load for my Colt Agent (sorry guys, I have sinned). I am using Win 231 with Hornady's 158 grain XTP. So far I have gotten good results with 3.8 grains , right about 650 fps out of the short barrel. No recoil what so ever. Accuracy is pretty much ten ring at 7 yards, exactly what I want.
