Winchester 22 Auto

Introduced for the Winchester Model 1903 semiautomatic rifle, the .22 Win Auto was never used in any other firearm. It will not chamber correctly in other .22 rimfire weapons, nor will other .22 rimfire ammunition, including the very dimensionally-similar .22 Remington Automatic, interchange with it.

Not easy to find, but it is out there. Check your local gun shows and some of the big distributors will issue some form of "commemorative" (read way over priced) ammo for this. Cool rifle and lots of fun when you can use it. Kyle

A few years ago the Old West Scrounger had some of this ammo produced. My best advice is to sight in this rifle, then use it just for hunting and very little plinking. You should be able to find enough ammo to keep it hunting.
If that was the rifle my cousin had, which I often used for squirrel hunting back in the forties, it is a truly unique rifle. Loads through a port in the stock like a Civil War Spencer, chambers by pushing a rod sticking out of the forestock, it fascinated me. But it requires a special cartridge, which I have not seen for sale in decades, which means it is almost a museum piece now. Sad.

Back in the 1980s I got to spend a pleasant afternoon or two at a bench rest on a 100 yard range behind a Winchester Model 1903 equipped with a Lyman tang sight in the company of its original owner who bought it new in the early 1920s. Despite the crisp, but very heavy trigger the rifle and vintage ammunition was good for 3-inch groups at 100 yards.

I have a first year 4 digit serial # 1903, they added the safety in the back of the trigger guard in 1905. The rifle was my grandfathers and was passed on to me. It only gets shot when I can find a box of ammo. The last box of .22 Winchester Automatic I found was about five years ago at $25 for 50 rounds at the OGCA meeting. The ammo was old Remington brand but they all worked. I did see some at the last meet but did not want to pay $50 for it.
