I was at a small gun show in Mesa,AZ earlier today and, for the first time in eons, noted that a dealer had Winchester 231 for sale. The price was $185 for an 8lb cannister.

The gun club had 4 or 5 one pound bottles for $21 each. I bought one to tuck away for a rainy day. Not a primary powder for me anymore but its versatility makes it good to have on hand.

My LGS has had W231 available for the last couple/few years. He does a good job of keeping stuff coming in even when things are scarce...

I really like 231, and have a decent supply. But, always good to have a good stash, so I just grabbed a 4 pound jug last week for $80. Little more than I wanted to spend, but this stuff is not getting less expensive.

If my memory serves me right I think I used Win 231 to load 12ga in the 60s. Can't remember if it was for field loads or mag loads. Red Dot for trap loads @ $2.25 a pound.

W231 was never a shotgun powder so I'm guessing it was a different Winchester powder. I don't even think W231 was available in the 60s. I think W231 was introduced in 1973 it there abouts. It replaced W230 which is not the same powder and also was not for shot shells.

HP38 for about $135 at Midsouth

I'm good shape powder wise but want to top off the tank in September. On my list is 8 pounds each of Titegroup, HP-38, WST and H4895

I like W231 powder a lot and always try to keep some on the shelf. I will need to get some more soon however. $21. for a pound is not a bad price.

What's the grain size on 231 like? I've been meaning to try it, but can't get any.

Picked up a lb of W231, Titegroup and CFE pistol at $21.00 a lb at Cabellas in Ft. Worth last week. S&B sp primers at 19.95 a box and Winchester sp at $24.95 per thousand. Local price is $39.95.
