Winchester 94 Texas Ranger Edition

Look at this rifle I found. The LGS sent me a text to come by and see if I wanted it. It's a 1974 production with a cast lifter. Of course I paid too much for it, but it was either that or leave it there. Anyway it is in pristine shape.

I love Winchester levers, and that one is right purty. To be perfectly honest I dont care for the badge in the stock, because it is otherwise beautiful wood. It does have a certain flair though. Great rifle, and thanks for sharing!

Very nice SFC. Winchester made a total of 5,000 of them. My book says the first 150 were special edition models sold through the Texas Ranger Association. Remaining 4,850 sold through regular Texas retail outlets. Nice having the fancy walnut. Yours looks to be in excellent condition. Thanks for sharing. Info came from History of Winchester Firearms 1866-1980 by Barnes.

I'm in agreement that I'm not a fan of the badges, etc in commemorative Winchesters. They made them for everything and most of them are not valuable as collector rifles.

It was common for towns and cities out west to order commemorative "centennial" Model 94 carbines to celebrate their 100th anniversary, and these were generally not all that fancy, with just some centennial inletting on the barrel with the name and dates for the town and an inlayed medallion on the stock. More often than not however, they are little used Model 94 or Model 94 XTR Carbines that just need a replacement if the medallion bothers you. They make superb shooters and it's by far the least expensive way to get a excellent condition Model 94 or 94 XTR.

Collectors have long hated all the Model 94s that came after 1963. However, the worst of the changes such as roll pins and stamped lifters that arrived in 1964 were gone by 1966, and those post 1963 to 1981 Model 94s are actually good buys as they offer the traditional quarter cock notch safety and predating the rebounding hammer, AE receiver, cross bolt safety and tang safety changes.

On the other hand, that's leading to a rise in value as shooters and I've seen Model 94s from that era that will come within $100-$150 of a similar condition pre-64 Winchester, and I'll spend the extra $150 in a heart beat, mostly because the Pre-64 Model 94s tend to be much more accurate.

Some of the other comemoratives that catch my eye are the NRA Musket with 26" barrel and military rear sight. The Canadian Centennial with 26" Octagon barrel, and John Wayne Commemorative.

I imagine some of the commemorative models are worth more than others if in unfired condition and how many of each produced. Too bad they could not have been made in the 1873 model instead of the period incorrect 1894. I recall my friend bought the Oliver Winchester Comm. in 38-55 for $600 back in 1980. Wonder what it would go for now on Gunbroker?

That Winchester '94 NRA Musket is Unique.
The long 26in Barrel, flip up Rear Sight, and
long Wood Forearm really sets it off from the
other Truck Load of '94 Commemoratives.

Wall Drug SD has the Win '94 NRA Musket
hanging up in the Restaurant side room. I
always look for it every time we stop there.
Mr. Hustead has quite the Collection of '94
Commemoratives on display there.

My Favorite Local Gun Shop seems to be able
to get '94 Commemoratives from time to time.
The most expensive one sold recently was the
"Crazy Horse". John Wayne does good too.
The rest are usually one third the price of a new
one.
