Recently I picked up a 200 round box of WWB 9mm from a store in Enid, and today I started loading it into moon clips for my 986 wheel gun. It was hard loading it into the moon clips and the rounds were too big to be chambered.

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you do about it? The store won't take it back, due to potential lability issues, but they gave me the contact information for Winchester and I have contacted them.

I have encountered defective factory ammo before, but never this.

Does it chamber OK? Maybe the moon clips are a bit tight.

Check the moon clips for burrs that may be binding when you try to close the cylinder. When they stamp out the recesses for the bullets, they sometimes leave an edge that sticks up just enough to create a problem. I've had some that I had to grind down to get proper function in my model 25. I doubt if it's the ammo. Never had a problem with WWB.

I tried to post a mechanical drawing but was not successful here. Google the spec's and outside dimensions and see if the ammo you are using is within proper spec. You will need a dial caliper to do so. If it is not simply call Winchester ammunition and ask them to issue a call tag for replacement.

Do you have other moon clips? Try another brand of ammo and see how that works.

The problem is the moonclips.

WWB is good ammunition. The Police Department I retired from uses WWB for our practice ammunition. Our carry ammunition is Winchester Ranger LE. And occasionally we got a dud with WWB but not as much as we did with Remington.

+1 for the moon clips being the issue. I’ve shot up a LOT of WWB (particularly 9mm and .45) and it’s always been good range fodder. I’d be very surprised if it turned out to be the ammo.

Guys, you were right. It was the moon clips. The ammo is fine--at least as far as this issue is concerned. I do have to test Winchester for light primer strikes, that I get only with WWB and Fiocchi due to their hard primers.

Thanks for helping me out here. Appreciate it. When the Winchester CS rep contacts me, I'll let them know the score.

Winchester White Box 9mm is frequently NATO over runs. Look for sealed and staked primers.
