Silvertips! Fine ammo. Used them in .30-06 Springfield. Especially in a much loved Remington 1903, the ST gave me some of the smallest groups I ever fired. Extremely effective in hunting. Used them in .357 S&W Magnum in a six inch 28-2. Only shot targets, cans, etc. But I liked them. Glad to see they are available. Will get a box or two for my revolvers simply for old times sake. For my rifle ... no as I already have a pile of hunting and target ammo on hand. Sincerely. bruce.
For SD I have and occasionally use 85 gr .380, 175 gr 10mm, 110 gr .38 spl, 210 gr 44 mag and 225 gr 45 Colt. I have a hard time finding 145 .357 magnum, which I used on duty for the 7 years I carried my 686.
Sadly, the original versions are not available anymore in rifle calibers. You’ll find them in pistol/revolver cartridges...I like the 110 gr Silvertip in 38 Spl.
Yes they're still available but expensive and hard to find ( at least in .32 acp). I'm a Seecamp fan, and shot mostly Silvertips through both my .32s until last year. I now shoot a different ammo ( PMC Bronze) that's readily available and a little less expensive.
Winchester Silvertip feeds like a champ through my .38 Super Colt Commanders. Have not been able to find a retail source. Midway says it's been discontinued. Other sources say out of stock and no backorders.
How available these are, I can't say. I'd suggest contacting whatever online ammo retailers you trust and ask if they have them, can order them, or notify you when (if?) they get them in stock. Or do the same at LGS in your area.
Looks like it depends on the caliber you want. A thread 13 months ago on the 145 grain 357's said Winchester made a run every 2 years, and Midway was selling it then from $27 to $30 per 50. Now both Midway and Cabelas show boxes of 20 for $16, with fancy new labeling. It's back-orderable on Cabelas, "coming soon" on Midway, FWIW.
I would love to find some of the 145 bullets to load .357 but I have been told that Winchester does not sell Silvertips as components anymore. Hopefully I was told wrong and will find some one day.
As mentioned, they put out batches every now and then.......
and it helps to be an early bird to get a shot at picking it up.
Back in the 60's I loved it in my hunting rifles for deer, very accurate and deadly......
as well as the old Remington "Bronze Tip" that worked out to 400 yards in my 30-06.
No one worried about what a bullet did back in the 60's, so I did not load the high dollar, JHP ,for my small arms.
Lead was the way to go, back then.
