$169.00 Primary Arms Micro Dot sight.......an extra $69 gets you an American Defense locking lever mount.....This set-up is going on my AMD-65 (AK47 variant). There are some great torture tests on these on youtube--------https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox0hgWlYWOg

Take your time, and do this right. If your AR is a flat top (it must be, since it has no sights) you won't need a base. So you first need good rings. You need to figure out if the scope/optics are 1", 30mm, or have a built in mount. For a lower power scope, I would get a good set of 1" steel rings. Then a used scope in the 4x range. Then with a realistic scope budget get something in the 4.5-14 x 40mm range. I have a V-X III Leopold in that power on my AR. On a bright day we can stretch ground hog hunting to 500 yards (With good ammo). A good scope will last decades (Leopold has a forever warranty). If you are thinking more of a red dot, Sightron makes some very good ones. I have no experience with reflex sights. An AR can do some pretty good shooting, just maintain it well and keep the barrel from over heating with lots of rapid shots, also keep the copper cleaned out of the barrel, and your barrel life should be more than 5000 rounds. With abuse you can mess a barrel up in less than 500. I wasn't in the military so I cleaned my AR like a bolt gun, my son that was a Marine about tore me a new one, over all the carbon I let build up in my bolt. I have in the 2000-2500 range of shots fired and the barrel will still do 1/4" groups (5 shot) at 200 yards. Have fun shooting. Ivan

I use 1x red dots. Primary Arms MicroDot and Aimpoint H1.

The advantage of a 1x red dot is fast target acquisition. There is no eye relief issues or having to be precisely lined up with the optic as with magnified scopes, and the 1x red dot provides unlimited field of view with both eyes open. Also, for those with tired old eyes that no longer enjoy iron sights, 1x red dot allows the shooter to simply focus down range on the target. At the Club, I practice with multiple steel and other targets at varying distances (as if engaging multiple bad guys) so fast target acquisition is fundamental. But if I was just shooting at a piece of paper in front of me and wanted to make small groups, fast target acquisition isn't a need. A magnified scope with crosshairs would be better suited.

For paper punching up to 150yds and maybe a coyote at your wife's farm, I'd consider a magnified optic. There are quite a few AR specific 1-4x variable scopes that fit into your budget. Take a look at one-piece AR scope mounts.

I have one mounted on a Sig522 SWAT. Pic below.

There are many of those with different label names on them.
The incorporated mount is a bit low for an AR platform.
The lens coatings used is quite dark but fine for recreational fair weather shooting.

For an AR I'd pass on it.

BUT if you like the compact design fixed low magnification optics, take a look at the Burris AR-332 fixed 3x. Retail is $350. Usually find them for $300. Yesterday Primary Arms had a special sale for $239 plus Burris has a $100 rebate that made the final cost $139. The PA sale is over today, but the rebate is still on. Amazon is selling the Burris via Primary Arms today for $264. So that will get you to $164 with rebate. If that is the style optic you want, you'll hardly find a better optic at that price than the Burris AR-332 on sale with rebate.

If it were my rifle.....

I like red dot sights, and use them often. But, for an all around sighting package for a rifle like yours, I would use a scope. A scope allows you to take advantage of the rifles accuracy at longer ranges, while not really hindering you at close range. I know a lot of guys can hit well at long range with dot sights, but a scope does offer more precision.

I would check the major distributors for something like a Nikon Pro-Staff or Buckmaster, or a Burris Fullfield ll that is on sale for about $135 - $150. Both nice scopes for the money. 2x7 or 3x9.

Then I would find a pair of Burris High or Extra high Tactical rings to mount directly to your receiver. About $50, and excellent quality.

I use this set up on one of my Bushmasters (pictured) using the Burris Fullfield 2x7 scope, and it is a nice package for not a lot of money. Down the road, you can also mount a small holographic red dot sight to the scope rings like on mine for the best of both worlds.

Don't own one but Forum members have. Rastoff bought one. I believe he returned it before even going to the range. Maybe he'll read this and offer more detailed remarks, but as I recall it didn't properly cowitness. I guess whatever Chinese engineer designed the thing never seen an AR . The laser obviously won't clear a standard front sight, and red lasers are useless outside during the day.

Palmetto is selling the Aimpoint Pro for $369.

thanks chattanoogaphil. i took the redfield back the next day, i listened to you and ordered the burris ar-332 its a very nice looking scope. thanks again

You're welcome.

There are so many choices for AR optics it can be overwhelming. The nice thing about getting the Burris for $160 is that after you get to more experience with your rifle you'll know more about what you want in an optic. So even if the Burris turns out to not best meet your needs, you can sell it used for what you paid for it new. Pretty rare event. I see the price at Amazon is now back up over $300 and Primary Arms is now at $349 ;). Have fun.
