Just watched the evening news about the warehouse fire in Chicago. The photos of the building, the men, the equipment covered in a thick layer of ice, from the water hoses, spraying water onto the fire...Reminded me....
A time when I was working the 2nd shift, cruiser patrol...A multi fire alarm came out. Cold weather like in Chicago now.
It was a paint warehouse. Lots and lots of paint. So it was a full fledged fire. My position was to stand in the middle of the intersection and block off traffic so the firemen could do their work.
It was brutal cold. I had on my horsehide leather coat. Service hat and ear muffs..gloves. God it was cold...
There was overspray from the fire hoses. I was covered with ice too. Everything was covered in ice.
Even though I was assigned to 2ndshift, it went over to 3rd shift. I had to stay on.
BUT....The point of my story here is....The Salvation Army van showed up about 2 in the morning with hot coffee..doughnuts, some rolls. I'll never forget them for that. And since then, the Salvation Army has always received my donation And they will continue to be the one I contribute to. More so than that other so called charitable organization. (Which I never, ever did see at one of our local disasters, or fires like the one I mentioned)
So guys, even though the red kettles are over for the year, don't forget to continue to give to them, if you can. There's a lot of people this time of the year that really depend on the Salvation Army for help. They're the best IMO.
AND, not to go into it too deep here or hi-jack other threads about dogs. Don't forget the shelters either at this time of the year. Those four legged friends need help from us too, especially in these bitter cold days and nights.
Thanks guys.
