My apartment has a wireless GE branded security system in it with window sensors, motion sensor, glass breakage, and fire. Nothing to fancy and free to us.

Nope. I live in the boonies, and have 2 German Shepherds and 13 mini doxies. The Sheperds are for bringing down the bad guy and the doxies are to give the bad guy fair warning, the mess is about to hit the fan. My one Shepherd Kira would have a notch in her pistol grip if she carried. LOL. Those 15 dogs can be so much more effective than any alarm system. Show me an alarm system that causes someone to get over 150 stitches/ staples. LOL The doxies hit low and the Shepherds hits high.

There's little distinction to be made amongst the available hardware, wireless, or otherwise ---- most alarm firms use the same, essentially fungible hardware. The distinctions are in the layout of your perimeter and interior "zones", and most importantly, the caliber of the monitoring personnel at the alarm firm's "central station", which usually ranges from inept, to poor. Find an alarm firm whose central station monitoring capabilities and equipment rise to the level of obtaining a certification from UL or etc. Most local alarm firms are monitored by personnel who flunked out at fast food franchises, and will not be much help to you, when you really need help...

I am not sure I want the monitoring for the reasons stated buy jkc
I am more looking for a system that will wake me during the night and sound a loud alarm that will alert my neighbors.
The sound of the alarm going off will send most thief's running.

As stated most of the equipment is very similar where problems arise is the way the system is designed. If you use motion detectors or photo beams or vibration sensors in the system you can have a lot of problems, especially if you have pets. After a bunch of false alarms it will be like the boy who cried WOLF....no one will respond.

My wireless system consists of a .45, .44 mag, .357, .38, .380, .30-06 and a 410, all wireless.

I installed one from LiveWatch.com/SafeMart.com about a year ago. It includes door sensors, motion sensors, and glass break sensors. I believe the control pad is by GE.

I can control the system with my iPhone or my computer. I am sitting in an ocean-front condo in Panama City, FL right now. I just checked the history on my iPhone, and there have been no breaches since I checked last night. The home with the system is about 100 miles South of ATL GA. My brother will feed my dogs this afternoon. He will call me, I will disarm the system for him to get in the house, and rearm it when I get an "all clear" call from him. Several months ago, I forgot to disarm the system for the maid to get in. The alarm went off when she opened the back door, and she immediately called my wife. Less than 60 seconds after my wife's phone rang, my cell phone buzzed. It was the monitoring company, checking on the alarm. I gave them the pre-set "all is ok" code word and apologized for the false alarm. I was impressed with their response.

Wireless home security? Yes, a GUN. It's modular, in that you can add more guns and increase coverage. It doesn't need batteries or electricity, and there is no monthly charge. :D

Will it automatically shoot a burglar and notify you and the police when no one is home?

I didn't necessarily get my system for protection when I am home . . . .

Obviously, it wouldn't, as it was intended as a joke. But to answer your question, no, as that would be called a booby trap and would get into liability issues. For times when I'm not at home, I use ADT.

I don't know if this is what you meant by wireless, but our home alarm system has a cellular uplink. In other words, if the alarm is tripped, it calls the alarm company on a cellular device that is integral to the system. We gave up our land line several years ago, and the alarm company installed the cellular uplink for us. It works very well...I have accidentally tripped the alarm a couple of times, and I get a call from the alarm company on my cell phone within a minute or so.

Take a look at Lifeshield, we got their system after a break in. Wireless sensors on doors and windows, a motion sensor that works on stuff bigger than a dog (60lbs). connected to the internet/phones for double back up. You can program it in many ways. i.e. when we are gone, and have someone come over to attend the animals and house, they have their own temporary codes. approx $30/month 2year contract equipment free.:)

The best part of the system is the Alarm company provides signs that you put up in the yard and on some windows. Make the target less attractive to would be intruders. AND if you set it off by mistake it is embarassingly loud!

I would love to have dogs, but I am not home enough to give them the attention they deserve.

So, that is what I did.

You guys that have a wireless system, how reliable are they and how often do you get a false alarm from wireless interference etc.?
I have guns for when I am home, but they are not much good when I am not home or when my wife is at home alone. I figure an alarm system may prevent a break in and avoid having to shoot someone when I am home and then go through the legal battles that can ensue. I have pretty much decided I want an alarm system and need information on wired vs wireless and monitored vs non monitored.

I have used alarm.com for years. The local installed, installed a GE wireless system, that uses all wireless sensors, even one out in my shed!! It has battery backup and works through satellite (antenna in attic), so even if someone cut the phone wires it still works.

We have had NO false alarms since installed in 2007, and the batteries are all good for 10 years.

I can log in from any computer, or my cell phone, to turn off, turn on the alarm, check all the sensors, and if the alarm goes off it notifies me on my phone instantly, and which sensor tripped.

Oh and the best thing is that they use non-proprietary equipment, so I can choose ANY monitoring service I want. You are not locked into ADT, etc.
