An Anomalous Mod 29-2
It has the small upright Ampersand---
This is a Warranty Replacement gun built to replace a gun for an unhappy customer.
Note the serial number is WAY above the range of the S prefix serial numbers which ended around S333500.
It gets a little strange when you look behind the yoke. There are no marks at all except the assembly number on the yoke.---
the assembly number on the yoke-
The serial number is on the cylinder. By this time, they were no longer numbered---
The extractor is not numbered. They normally are.---
No caliber mark (0), no fitter's or inspector's stamps on the gripframe---
The grips have flat brass escutcheons which started about 1973 and blue circles which ended about 1973.
Summary:
1- The serial number is on the butt and the back of the cylinder.
2- There are no markings behind the yoke except for the assembly number on the yoke. There are no markings in the barrel shroud.
3- No model number.
4- There are no fitter's or inspector's stamps anywhere.
The explanation for this unique gun---
Roy believes it was built to satisfy an irate customer. Perhaps he was an Atlantic City Police Officer that had purchased his M&P duty weapon. Being in New Jersey might explain why S&W put that serial number on this gun. That is, because that number was registered to the owner. Doc44 dates the gun to 1973-74. That is consistent with the grip style and features. That would be the height of the Dirty Harry craze for Model 29s that kept them in short supply and very hard to get. This customer wisely chose the hardest gun to get that S&W made at the time!
It was probably built in the Service Dept. or the Tool Room.
NONE of the documents shown below have the yellow/red blocks that obliterate personal data. Those blocks are only on the internet pics for explanation and to protect the privacy of people .
The original order form for the Letter. There are three notes written on the form by Roy Jinks as he tried to figure this gun out:
The first letter Roy sent:
Evidently, he sent Roy some pics and received this letter-
The invoice for the M&P shipped to M&H for the Atlantic City Police Dept. in 1947 with serial number S947990-
I believe it is unfired since the Factory testfire.
The Dark Rosewood grips are just like the day they left S&W.
It remains in about As-New condition. If you need a percentage rating, it easily attains 99% +.
I see some very tiny handling marks that you will have to search for. About the only ones you are likely to see are a tiny rub on the left muzzle and a faint scratch on the cylinder. They probably occurred in the case. There is a faint turn line from handling.
The case is solid with light wear to the flocking. There is a crack in the top styrofoam. Joe Cebull can make it look new.
All the case hardware is solid. There is a ding on the top right rear corner. There are some scratches on the top:
The gun came to me with no Box and No Papers. I am including these papers I believe to be correct for the era of this gun.
2>> An EARLY Chief Special Airweight, ALUMINUM Cylinder, SQUARE Butt, FIVE Screw Sideplate, shipped in Oct, 1953.
The Square Butt guns are scarce, and the Square Butts with the Bug Screw on the Big Bug Screw are scarcer. Besides normal attrition, some cracked cylinders when fired. In addition, from 1954 onward, any gun with an aluminum cylinder that was returned for any kind of service had a steel cylinder installed and S&W would NOT return the aluminum cylinder to the owner.
ALL numbers match- Butt, Barrel, Cylinder, Yoke, Extractor, and Grips.
Mechanically Sound, Good timing, perfect bore and chambers. Finish is above average for an old Airweight. A good cleaning and Wax Job would improve the appearance dramatically. Grips are nice with no cracks or chips. Note pitting at right muzzle and underlug.
DISCLAIMER- Sold as a Collector's Item ONLY! DO NOT shoot this gun! NOT Warranted and NOT Guaranteed for shooting! By Buying this gun you agree not to shoot it and assume all liability for harm or damage if you do shoot it.
