I was flipping through the channels a little while ago, and on one showing Olympic Games, was Women’s Rugby. The United States was playing Great Britain in a quarter finals game. The US team won 17-7. The US team was fun to watch and easy for me to pull for, unlike Women’s Soccer teams of old. These women were TOUGH! I’m sure some of the GB team, spent quite a while in the ice bath. These girls were really hitting each other, and of course they aren’t wearing helmets or pads! Check ‘em out before it’s over!

So much for the old line, "It takes leather balls to play rugby."

I hope, after the game, they followed this:
"Rugby is great. The players don’t wear helmets or padding; they just beat the living daylights out of each other and then go for a beer. I love that" (Joe Theismann, Former NFL Quarterback)

One of the "most entertaining" rugby games that I participated in was a special match to raise money for the Churchill foundation in 1965 played in the East End of London. 30 women versus 15 men. The night before the match I was asked, together with two other men to take part in the women's team as their coach could not find females for the positions of fly and scrum halves and a hooker (no jokes please!). Since my normal position was "hooker" together with the other two chaps we were "smuggled into the girl's dressing room, and came out in the middle of the pack to the field. Well the game was finally tied due to some constructive thievery by the ref, but I have never eaten so much mud during every scrum!! We did raise close to 5000 pounds for the charity as the spectators were highly amused by the 40 minutes each way, with side-bets on whether the three "ringers" would have to be carried or would be crawling off at the end of the game!!! And no, we did not end up showering with our 27 co-conspirators!!! Dave_n

...hose are some rough, tough, and athletic ladies. Can only imagine what a bar fight among them would look like. I think it would make the biker chick fights look tame.
Likewise, the fate of any potential mugger would be sealed in short order. :D

@Dave_n: Great story! i went to a private school (what you lot confusingly call a public school) here in Canada and somehow managed to avoid "rugger" entirely. Did play soccer (aka "football","footy") though, which was much less dangerous! Never got to play with any of the girls' schools, though :(

Edited to add: I just got a new GP, originally from S. Africa. I went to see him last week about my sore back, and when the X-rays came back, he called and said, "Actually, your back is in better shape than mine, and I'm only 59. I used to play rugby in S.A."

Also, from an article I just read:
Team GB captain Emma Uren was disappointed... after a 17-7 quarter-final defeat against the USA, yet could still acknowledge the occasion. “Something I never thought I’d experience to be honest,” she said. “It’s special, and we have to remember we’re making history.”

I was a founding member of the rugby team at my high school. It was only a club then and is now a school supported team with a dedicated field and locker room. We had a lot of fun in those years traveling and playing rugby around the midwest. We played a sizable college team one day (I played prop) and was opposite a gentleman nicknamed Bruno. My legs were so sore the next day that I could not walk. Only day of high school that I missed. Is women's rugby ;ike women's volleyball.

Just about 2 miles from my house is a rugby club with a dedicated field. Seems popular and getting more so. I have driven by on a cool, wet day and saw the kids scrumming in the mud. That speaks of dedication and love for the sport. it'll never be as big here as it is in other places, but it is growing. One reason is the tackling and hitting rules make it seem marginally more safe than football to some.

Not quite sure what you are asking.

I was having some auto work done and a gal wearing a shirt that said something like "Only Tough Girls Play Rugby" came in. She was surprised that I knew the rules and terminology, and I was surprised that she played in an organized rugby league.

About the only part of the Olympics I have watched has been the Rugby 7's, both men and women. Some really great play in both cases, and Fiji not winning the men's gold was a bit of a surprise, as was the US winning bronze for the women.

Didn’t they lose today?

Sorry, I didn’t want to tell the results in case folks wanted to watch it. They basically went the ENTIRE length of the field with NO time on the clock, and made the kick for the win. They had to have snatched the heart out of the Aussie women! They definitely snatched victory from the jaws of defeat!! Very exciting!

Onomea’s link above shows it very well.

Glad they won the bronze.
I was thinking the NZ game, and didn’t know they played later that day.
