Does anyone have any experience with the quality of the grips that Gungripsupply offers?
I plan on changing out the rubber grip on my S&W 617 for a set of wood grips.

No experience with their grips. I'd recommend you check out Ahrend's, though, as well.

They're probably the most mentioned grip on this board, and really are nice. They're the only wood grips I own - the only brand I've bought and I sold the woods grips that came on my other S&Ws. They're worth checking out.

Here are two 617-4s with Ahrends grips in Cocobolo.

Depending what engineering chage (- number) your gun is could go a long way in determining what grips are correct for it. Aftermarket grips are fine but if it's a no dash or even a -1 you might want to get S&W combat grips for it. By the way I like Ahrends grips and I think they are a good bang for the buck.

Ditto on the Ahrends. Good fit and finish. Nice selection of woods. Fair price.

I have a 617 no dash as well as a 17-4. Is there a unique concern with the grips for these guns as to how the grips fit, or is your mention of what is correct for it just concerning that they are square butt?

I ordered my Ahrends cocobolo retro-target grips unfinished. I finished them with a couple of coats of my homebrew penetrating oil finish, which darkened them appreciably, followed by some wax. Also shown: HiViz #SW617 (Green) fiber optic front sight and DS-10 speedloader, handle, and loading baseplate.

The S&W combat grips that are K frame will fit any K frame with a square butt. There is no right answer to your question but most collectors like to have period correct S&W grips on their guns. However I have combat grips on a couple of Model 18's and a Model 15 just because I like them that much.

I've ordered from Gungrip Supply and found their product & customer service to be first rate. I'd order from them again.

Gun Grip Supply is good to deal with. Most of their grips are made by Altamont.

Two good sources for stock urethane finished Ahrends Grips are gripseller on ebay- all pairs are $60 and she has photos of every single pair. A more limited selection is available from Top Gun Supply.
Both of these sellers ship extremely quickly and are responsive to any issues. Of course, if you want one of the oddball woods , you will have to order directly from Ahrends.

Don't rule out the exotic hardwood grips from Hogue either. They make some beautiful grips that fit my large hands well. My shooters are evenly divided between wood Ahrends and Hogues with a couple pairs of S&W wood combat stocks.

I read this stuff and can't believe it. They've been making K frame guns for 100+ years now. For the most part, all the grips are interchangeable. The posters so far have limited the response to huge target style grips. There are much more elegant examples available (I suggest you look at the top of this page.) I know, those are square butt, but similar examples are out there in round configuration. Usually in better wood the farther back you go. S&W made some excellent grips, just not over the last 40 years.
