Or if you are cheap like me get some 2x5" cut a slot so that they sit on top of the leadscrew of the vise and go to a local rug store or wally world and pick up a small throw rug cut the rug to fit the sides facing each other and over the top of the 2x6" and either use some contact cement or small brads to hold the rug in place. Or substitute some leather or other type material. Frank

I have made several different types of padded vise jaws out of Oak and Leather. I even inserted strong magnets in the back so the jaws stick to the vise and won't fall off when opened up. This Leather is 9-10 weight which is pretty darn thick and I believe is available even thicker if desired.

I’ve got an old Decker Rifle Vise and use it quite a bit. I’m sure they’re out of business and nice ones bring close to $100 shipped on ebay. They’re functional, but not pretty. Fort Sandflat makes beautiful wood vises, but you’ll spend $130 or more.

For under $60, you can get Tipton’s plastic version of the Decker. It’s just as functional as the Decker and is quite sturdy.
