What part of Nevada? Because there is a GIANT difference in the flora and fauna between Northern and Southern Nevada. And hunting opportunities will be dependent on where you are also. Gun ranges are pretty plentiful, but so is open space where you can go and shoot as you please. As for photographic places? Nevada is beautiful! You will have a lot to see both North and South, just keep your eyes open.

Thanks for the responce i will be working in winnemucca but will happily travel, I have no knowledge of this area at all so all help greatly received and its looking like dec- feb i will be over, atb wayne

Thats a nice area, one of the rare farming areas of nevada. I remember once taking a 4 wd type road near there, I think it was "smith valley", and seeing antelope and a bunch of wild horses raced my truck going up a canyon. You should like it. Its as different as day and night to the southern part of nevada around vegas.

Excuse me! I got my wires crossed. Winnemucca is farther north and more like high dessert. I was thinking of yerrington when I wrote the above. You will still like it. If it was me though I would be wearing a barrel as I like gambling and need to put some distance between me and the BJ tables.

sounds great I love to see different places I have always wanted to see yosemite to photograph after reading ansel adams books so will definately stop off there as its not too far, atb wayne

I also was a employee of yosemite NP in 1960. You are quite aways from there at winnemucca especialy in winter as tioga pass is closed over winter. You about have to go around it via sacramento/reno. Summertime you would do it by useing tioga pass out of lee vining on highway 395. You will like it! Northern california is beautiful too.
I love the entire east side of the sierra nevadas range of mountains to the west of winnemucca. The only thing wrong there is the politics.

Did you say UK? Have you ever been out in the desert before?
Get ready for a great adventure! You will have unlimited places to shoot and photograph. Get ready for wide open spaces! Most of the Nevada population lives in Clark County.- Las Vegas. There is a bunch over around Reno. Otherwise it's mostly you and a few ranchers. Used to be stationed in Vegas. Once you get North of town its just like another world.

Couple of must see places IMO in Nevada, Fly Geyser, Lake Tahoe, Mt. Charleston, Lake Mead, The Colorado River, and the Hoover Dam.

Thanks for all your help i have not been in a desert in the US but had a job in Qatar and spent a little time photographing the desert there.
we had no 4x4 just a little honda car which we left and headed out on quads.
so i need to start reading up thanks again, wayne

Quads are great out here. They are my favorite thing to do. Some familys around me have one for everyone in the family. The wife and I are members of a club and usualy there are rides going on all the time. I really am a loner but it is smart to ride with someone else in case you breakdown or whatever.

Cathedral Gorge is a little know treasure, as are Caliente and Pioche that are quite nearby. Mind you, all those places are a LONG way from Winnemucca.

Be aware that there can by some BIG gaps between the people and cell coverage can be spotty in a lot of places. Consider these facts:

1) If you overlay the state of Nevada over a map of the UK on the same scale with the Southern tip of NV level with the Lizard, the Northern border of Nevada is somewhere up near Aberdeen.

2) Nevada is larger in area than the whole UK.

3) The population is this huge area is 2.75 million, yes two point seven five million. That is not a mistype.

4) 1.375 million of those people live in Clark County, most in the Las Vegas Valley.

5) Washoe County that includes Reno-Sparks has 340k residents.

6) Only Clark and Washoe counties have more than 100k residents.

7) Esmerelda County has 971, down from ~1150 when I came here in 1997.

8) Don't rely on place names on a map to have fuel and water. Many places are just abandoned mining settlements or the names have been put on the map by bored cartographers. ;)

LVSteve, I know Cathedral Gorge, Caliente and Pioche pretty well as we live at cedar city utah roughly 2 hours to the east. Spring valley state park is another beautiful area straight east about 20 minuets out of pioche. Worth seeing if you havent especialy NE of the lake. Pioche, they claim was the bloodiest town in the west in the day. Its a interesting tourist mining ghost town with a couple bar/casinos now with only one cafe. I like going there and to Caliente. Another nice but very primitive park is beaver dam state park east of caliente. All places I listed are about all within a 50 mile area to each other.

A job in "Windymucca !! Sorry about that............

While you are there you might try out the basque food at the winnemucca hotel and the Martin house and push it down with a Peacon Punch.

Lots of small game to play with and then there is lope and deer but you need a tag for those and you normally put if for the draw in early spring, which you missed.
As for the range.............
Just go down any dirt road about 3-4 miles away from a house or rancher and find a safe back ground.
Nearest 200 yard range is 22 miles north of Reno on the road going towards Pyramid lake.

That could be a understatment....Go with someone who knows the territory......Some of those dirt, sand roads seem to go nowhere...Never venture farther than your avaiable gas will let you get there and back...The difference between Northern Nv. and the LV is vast...Especially when it comes to Guns, politics in general, and many other opinions.....Enjoy a wonderful place....I hear from some old friends that the econemy isn't as good as it used to be.......

thanks for all the input sounds like i am in the middle of knowhere but i will still enjoy the experience, I would only travel with spare food water and fuel it will be my first time in the us but i have been dropped off in some hard going places so i do know to prepare before travelling. I am unshure as to weather i will be alone yet or if i have company but again i do prepare, I will let you know how i get on,atb wayne
