I'd like to have a 340PD for concealed carry. I haven't given up on finding a used one, since they are so expensive, but the LGS's around here don't even stock new ones.

From the S&W web site, it appears there are two models. 163062 has a hi viz front sight, and I believe it also has the internal lock. 163061 has no internal lock, but comes with a more conventional ramp front sight with a red insert, according to the photos on the S&W web site.

Do I have that right? I like the idea of the hi viz front sight, assuming it would not be prone to snag drawing from a pocket holster, but would rather not have the IL.

Comments from owners appreciated. I know it'll be a handful to shoot. I like carrying my 642 more than my 640 Pro (not shooting it, carrying it) and think 11 ounces would carry even better.

I have a very early example from the first year of production.

It has the read insert ramp sight, but also has the IL.

So that's a third model. Don't know the number.

The #103061 red ramp is the one that I purchased with no lock..you can replace the front sight with a hi viz later..but if you go with the HI viz from the factory the barrel shroud slot is longer and will not fit replacement sights correctly...they are different tenor shapes on the hi viz factory sights...best bet is no lock version and you have the option to change out sights later..;) I did just as you are about to do and got a red ramp and changed to a hi viz..then to a tritium night sight..the hi viz in the end wasn't as good for me as a white dot. My other pocket revolver is mp340 and I've had it for quite some time and the XS sight is superb..I tried several sights on my 340PD and finally got another Trijicon front like my 340mp.

Don’t have a 340/360 because I don’t plan to shoot magnums, but my 342PD handles +Ps just fine. I have many guns in my rotation, but because of its 10.7 ounces I find myself reaching for my 342PD most often during hot weather when I am wearing minimal clothing

I’ve had the no lock 340PD for several years and it has the red ramp insert front sight. Great concealed carry but tough to shoot b/c the trigger is so heavy it’s off my 10 lb. trigger scale. I don’t shoot or carry magnum loads b/c for me follow up shots are just too difficult. Almost any kind of +P is doable and regular practice w/+P and standard pressure is a necessity though.

It took the LGS a couple times, but I finally got the right one, no hammer to snag, hi viz red front sight, no lock. Sometimes, only the first shot is 357 mag. Sometimes all of them. I have no number, LGS handled that.

I have an original and it has a red insert ramp front sight which I prefer for snag free draws. Love the gun and carry it with 135gr. short barrel gold dots. With a gun of this size and weight, I believe sights are the least important feature as this gun is not for target use and more of a point and shoot firearm.

I’ve been carrying my 340 PD since 2008. HiViz (green) from the factory and the IL which doesn’t bother me. I also opted for the CTC grips not only for the laser, but the extra padding on the back side (you’ll get the drift once you shoot one!). Whole package in a Mika Pocket Holster is the shizzell!

I just went the no lock route, could be more happier with it too. And just to put it into perspective, it was $470.00 more than a standard 442 for the savings of 3 ounces. Worth every penny if you can afford it sir..

btw, the midnight creeper MK1 pairs VERY well with the 340PD...

Have you given any thought to the M&P340. It is only 2 ounces heavier (13.8 oz) and comes with a stainless cylinder which is more forgiving than the titanium cylinder on the 340PD. Comes with a big Dot night sight. I installed Uncle Mikes grips which don't hinder concealed carry at all and give a better grip.

Nice snub. I took out the lock and put in the "plug" and never gave it another thought.

Yes, Sailor, I did briefly consider that, but I really want to go with maximum weight reduction compared to the three snubbies I have now. (642, 640 Pro, Pitbull .45). Thank you.
