Would you give $300 for this Colt Series 70 .45 Gov. Model?
FA036.jpg
I know the pics are terrible so let me describe it. Guy I know kept it in his vehicles for years, did not ever clean it. It has some freckled rust on the frame and slide. There is a small rust spot on the frame at the top of the right grip and the front strap has some rust. It looks like it had oil all over it at one time and it is now kind of a gel. It will clean off. I have been wanting a Gov. Model for a while and I have bought this one for $300 but would like ya'll's opinion. Any suggestions on how best to clean it up? Thanks in advance.

Just send it my way and I'll clean it up for free. And, pay you $300.00 plus the shipping!!!

That's what I thought. I told the guy he could get more for it. He had took it by a pawn shop and they said they would give him $300 but he said he would rather sell it to me if I wanted it. So now the clean up. Some of this oily stuff is thick and hard to wipe off. Should I just keep cleaning with #9 or is there something I can just drop it in for a day or two, kerosene, mineral spirits, etc.? Any suggestions?

I always take the grips off while cleaning. However these grips are kinda rough and will need to be re-finished or replaced. Had not thought of a degreaser, thanks.

I find myself using a fair amount of Carb Cleaner around my shop for cleaning oily gun parts. You can purchase this by the gallon or by the spray can. Both have their uses.

On cleaning jobs like this I used to use a mix of solvent and Hoppe's NO. 9. It worked very well and the Hoppe's made it smell nice! .... Big Cholla
