Wow $3000.00 for a 29-1

Was at a local gun shop today getting some powder, looked in the used gun case and saw a 29-1 8 3/8" with a box. It had some wear at the muzzle but other than that I appeard to be in excellent shape. Is this gun about 2x over priced or am I missing something.

Welcome aboard Jim. 29 experts will be along shortly. Don't know too much about those, ... I'll defer to Lee's input on the -1's. One of those online gun auction sites are good if you sign up to see what the actual completed (as in sold) auctions are going for.

Dash 1's are very scarce, having a very short production window.
The ones known to us are counted in a couple of dozen.
I have often seen them sell for 3grand UP.

The books will probably not tell you how many. But as Lee says they are numbered in several handsful from what I know and I think Chuck has most of them .
Depending on actual condition 3 grand is probably a bargain. Wish I could afford one.

$3K is probably a bargain as the 8 3/8" length is even more scarce.... From what I've seen, most 29-1's were 6 1/2" guns.

Hi Jim:

The rarest 29-1 barrel lengths are the 5 inch and 4 inch. There are 3 five inch 29-1's made and less than a handful of 4 inch 29-1's documentated so far. I am only aware of two in nickel finish. Really nice 29-1's are hard to find and will bring the money.

Standard catalog of s&w shows 2850.00 for excellent and 3750.00 for new in the box.And those are 2006 prices.If you have the money buy it!

We know of approximately twenty-five or so with two being the (correct) 4-screw variation and the rest with a 3-screw frame (all are stamped MOD. 29-1 in the yoke cut). These guns sold for $1500 back in the mid-80s and only have continued to go up in price. The 29-1 shown below was shipped in September 1962 and purchased from Harrison Carroll in 1984 for $1500.

I'm not nearly as adept with a camera as Doc 44, but this 29-1 found it's way into my stash not long ago...

It's one of the more frequently seen 6 1/2" 3-screw models.

The grips on the gun I saw were not "cokes" like the ones you guys have. They looked like a darker goncalo alves without the diamond.

Jim, welcome to the forum. My focus is on this particular Model 29 and yes, 3K is about the going rate for one in 97%+ condition. However, I have paid more for very rare barrel lengths such as the 4 inch 3 screw gun which only one has been documented to date. There are two 4 screw 4 inch nickel 29-1s documented to date making only 2 dozen documented so far. There is one on GB right now that while a -1 and rare, is overpriced due to its condition; in my opinion.
Post the contact info for the gunshop you spotted the -1 in if you decide not to buy it for yourself as there are several collectors on this site that would like to add one to their collections.

I saw a 4" four screw LNIB Nickel 29-? "S" serial last year for $1400 and hesitated just a bit too long to get it.

On a side note ,
I was aware lower production dash 1 magnums were desireable but very surprised that a -1 .357 CM without tools, box or docs and severely altered grips sold quickly to a prominent S&W dealer for $850 recently .

Im sure the gun will relist shortly but had assumed $850 was already close to full retail even with correct grips.

Am curiouse now to see what the next price tag says.
