I have a friend who wants to sell his 629. I'm trying to help him. It is serial #BFM2556, and has about 200 rounds thru it. He's wondering when it was made, and approx. value. It has a really nice box[minty], manual, smith paper, and perfect wood grip. It had a rubber grip installed when new.

Thanks, Mike.

Dates to around 1990. What's the product code off the end label on the box? S&W made a bunch of variations with a range of values. Pics would be nice too. Maybe sell it at the Mason show this weekend.

Well, let's start with the serial #. I'll be on the safe side and say 1993-94. Open the cylinder and see if the 629 is followed by a dash and another number. Maybe a 4.
Also barrel lenght will help in determining value.
If you go to Gunbroker.com you can see what other people are paying, or not paying, for a gun like you have.
I'm gonna' guess north of $550.

s&wchad I must have been writting same time as you.
I'm useing SCofS&W 3rd Ed to come up with that date. Where did you look for a 1990 mfg. date?
I have the hardest time with S&W serial numbers!

GF,
Page 400. Some prefixes were used out of sequence, but I figure they were issued in alphabetical order when approximating dates. Not foolproof but better than nothing. The Spec Ord and product codes will pin it down.
