U tube story of pilot that dropped candy to the people in Germany. I don't know how to show it here. Tom Brokac (sp) was doing the speaking and back ground by Morman choir. Neat story.

The miracle of American execeptionalism

A wonderful story-The history of the American Constabulary, evolution to the Berlin Brigade-the duty train-The terrible cold war-and now only faint shadows of the "Wall" remain-we recently stayed in a huge spa located in the former east Germany-near an abandoned east German armor installation-
Evidence of our success in restoring and liberating Germany? My son married a German girl-the cold war and WW2 are just history-vestiges of the wars are vanishing-and America has abandoned the majority of its installations. The Berlin Air Lift is memorialized-God Bless NATO.

I remember seeing a documentary or newsreel decades ago which showed WWII GIs giving away their rations to hungry children in areas they had just liberated (in Italy? can't remember).

IIRC, the GIs had to be ordered to stop as the brass believed they were compromising their ability to continue the war effort.

Gal Halvorson, the candy bomber, is a local hero. He lives in the next town over from me.

A few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Gail Halvorson and members of Berlin Air Lift crews at a reunion held at Hill Air Force Base. One of my wife girl friend's father (recently passed away) was a crew member. My wife and her girl friend helped out with the reunion and we did a little ferrying of crew members around to tours and events.

Gail is still going strong. The last few weeks he has been doing some book signings locally for the new book and DVD by Tom Brokaw.

A distant cousin, who passed on many years ago, flew with those missions at the end of WWII and the Berlin Airlift, and went on to fly with early Air Force One crews. He told stories about those days, but never told exactly what role he had. It wasn't allowed back then. But when he would come home, we had "overflow" family (the evicted kids, to make room) sleeping in the guest rooms.

I wish my memory of that time was better, but age catches up with us all.
