WWII Carrier Pigen found in chimmney in the UK

Yeah, I saw that in the NYT. Very cool indeed! I had not realized how pervasive carrier pigeons were in WWII. WWI, sure, but WWII was a surprise to me.
 
I hope we see some followup to this soon.

Many years ago, my family kind of adopted an older man, retired, who became a kind of grandfather sort to several of my nieces and nephews. He was a regular at family dinners, holidays, and more. In WW2, he was enlisted and worked in the secret code offices of the Brit's; needless to say when I saw this story of the pigeon I immediately thought of this man, who I am pretty sure would have been the sort of person they now need to find. It's about 20 years too late now.
 
Well, it sure beats finding unexploded Nazi ordinance in your chimney!:eek:

A quarter million pigeons! I had no idea so many were used, given how common radio was.

I guess getting messages from occupied France makes sense, of course.
