WWII history buffs: great new movie "The Imitation Game"

Steve, I thought the director was masterful in depicting the effects of the war on the British population at home, as well as the deaths of their soldiers and sailors on land and sea, as well as the reality of the quote early in the film by one of the British officials, "We're losing this war."

Without the genius of Alan Turing and his team, the outcome would have been much, much different. They didn't win the war by themselves, but what they accomplished was crucial to victory by the Allies, and was a triumph of ingenuity, determination, and the foresightedness of Churchill in recognizing and supporting the concept of beating the Germans' machine with a better one.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

A few years back PBS/NPR had a two part more accurate story of the breaking of the code.

Perhaps they will re-run it

Ringo, I think you're thinking about a different movie....this one doesn't have an Eastwood connection that I can discern. Director was from Norway, and Clint wasn't in the movie....

Quite correct. I forgot what thread I was in at the time--brain damage on my part. :D I plan on seeing this one--Unbroken and American Sniper all this week and on three consecuative days. Im taking a Nam AF vet to see American Sniper--for matinee showing on Tuesday,. I dont know if he is willing to see these others or not?

Eastwood is involved with "American Sniper" (I think as a Producer).

Possibly both--including Director. Im hoping hat somebody out there--will convince Eastwood to make a movie about the Battle of Schloss Itter.I think he would be the only one to make it as factual as possible.

Just went and saw this movie. I was absolutely blown away by the style and Cumberbatch's superb acting. As somebody born in Britain and raised with stories of WWII, you may guess how affected I am by this film.

The filmmakers from the U.K. can make same darn great movies. Imnow a fan of all Carry On movies. Also, we fianlly now have one of your WWII classics on region one dvd--that one be: The Password is Courage w/ Dirk Bogarde. Its also good to see that JimDale is still alive and well.He made several Carry On movies as well assoefor Disney like: Hot Lead and Cold Feet--and The Unidentified Flying Oddball--which you guys renamed: King Arthur and the Spaceman--or something like that? Also,Jim Dale has his own website if interested?

PS--Sir John Mills rocks.
