WWII Nazi flare gun

I've never owned one of these until yesterday when I visited a friend's shop. I thought it was pretty nice condition and not too expensive so it came into the cave

duv is the Nazi manufacturer's code for Berlin-Lubecker Maschinenfabrik. 42 is the date of manufacture.

Do they fire conventional modern flares? Could you have one on a boat for signaling?

Or for defense where real guns are banned or excessively regulated? Might take out an unwanted boarder.

Good question TS. I am going to research it and find out about it's specifications and capabilities. It appears to be in excellent working condition with a nice smooth bore.
