In a previous life I worked in a high end metrology field, and I have no doubt that this is a big deal. GPS timing is great, but it's a lots of eggs in a dodgy basket when you really get into it.
 
Used WWV to get time ticks at sea to determine the ship’s chronometers’ error. Accurate time was a necessity for celestial navigation.
FWIW BBC radio has an accurate time tick at the top of each hour.
