WWV vs Satellite Time

There was a little discussion recently regarding the impending shutdown of the NIST radio time stations WWV, WWVH, and WWVB. A 2019 budget proposal for NIST would close the stations which syncs the time for an estimated 50 million radio-controlled clocks, wristwatches and appliances.

In a previous life I worked in a high end metrology field, and I have no doubt that this is a big deal. GPS timing is great, but it's a lots of eggs in a dodgy basket when you really get into it.

Used WWV to get time ticks at sea to determine the ship’s chronometers’ error. Accurate time was a necessity for celestial navigation.
FWIW BBC radio has an accurate time tick at the top of each hour.
