I'm waiting for my CC permit and have been looking for a smaller pistol than my M&P9 and one of my 1911s. As you may recall, I love my M&P (not the trigger) and was thinking I may as well stick with S&W and get a Shield. However, even with that built in bias, I can't help leaning towards an XDs based on the comparisons I've seen on you tube. In addition, the 4.0 is really hard to resist - seems like a perfect balance between carry and shoot-ability. Please help me understand why the Shield is a better carry pistol.

XDs is a nice pistol with a really nice trigger. Not to try and muddy things up, another option is the relatively new Ruger LC9s. Striker fired version of the LC9. Looked at one earlier today at the gun club and it's quite a nice design. Didn't get to actually shoot one, but did dry fire it a bit. A really nice trigger pull with a nice reset. So many good choices out there now a days.

Edit: As a side note, the quality of main brand name pistols is so close that it really comes down to personal preference. Does it fit your needs, does it fit your hands, do you like how it shoots, etc... I'm not brand loyal, and have owned and liked many types over the years.

Members here may be able to give anecdotal stories all they want, but the best thing you could do is find someplace that has an XD-S4.0 as a rental, so you can shoot it side-by-side and see for yourself and decide.

I must say that even as someone who prefers the XD-Service and XDMc to the M&P equivalents, I do like the 4.0 better than the original XD-S, but not as much as I like shooting the Shield.

...and members here are more than willing to try to convince you to purchase a specific firearm. The reality is you have to determine what's best for you! That entails research about, and then renting those designs that suit YOUR needs.
