Year of the Snake

One of my old steel mill acquaintances lived through that. Another guy I know stepped off the helicopter into the aftermath of one of the corpse-riddled air fields or some place like that. He said it's a smell one never forgets. Poor Andy was part of the cleanup crew. He said some smart-mouthed officer told him "This is practice for latrine duty!"

Tet, the Vietnamese New Year. The Year of the Snake.
Time for some rice cake, Banh Chung or maybe Banh tet.
I remember well January, February '68. For those that were there, Welcome Home.
Some folks forget that the USS Pueblo was captured by North Korea around January 15th '68. I was on the advanced party at Chu Lai to go to Iwakuni, Japan. We were told that we may get cold weather gear. I extended my tour to back to Japan. Spent the next six months in country. Every squadron stayed where they were. I remember well the 0330 wake up call. I was working night shift (1800-0600). The rocket attack lasted about 45 minutes. Oh the fun we had.
