Years for these two Model 19s. Fair price?

I'm looking for my first Smith. First revolver, really, and found these two locally. Curious on the age and if the price is reasonable for today's market. The 19-3 with target grips has a serial of 9K5814 and the 19-5 with smaller grip is AAW4937. The 19-3 has a box, and the 19-5 does not. Thanks! I've looked for info online and everything points here. I appreciate the help.

From what I can see, prices being equal, I'd go for the 19-3; P&R, target stocks, and a box (probably 1976ish; the other is around 1983/84). I'd try to buy it for $700 but if I didn't have one and really wanted one I wouldn't find $849 totally unreasonable. Most shops will negotiate at least a little. I think 22 High Power is correct. The 19-3 seems like a decent deal for say $850 out the door.

The 19-5 seems overpriced to me. It should be cheaper than the 19-3 if both are in the same condition. With no box it falls even lower.

A 4 inch 19-3 is classic. Sounds like the whole package and targets are nice. A 4 inch 19-3 was my first handgun in 1973 at the age of 17. Still have it.

Model 19-3 serial 9K60444 was shipped in July 1977.

I'd have no interest in the 19-5, unless you can get it for $500. It's a very functional revolver, but has no collector value.

The 19-3 is P&R, has box and targets and will always be worth more. It will be easier to sell later

19-3 is priced about right for my part of the world, Out the door as listed would be great. Agree with others here, I have no use for a 19-5 unless it was in the $ 500 range.

Older is better. Go for the 19-3. The prices on both are not totally out of line given todays prices but offer a bit less and see what happens.

Welcome to the forum. I'd be all over the M19-3 but try to get it for a little less. Never hurts to try.
And watch out, that first Smith can lead to a costly addiction.

Definitely the 19-3, it's a P&R gun with the box. Around here in southeast PA $850 would be a decent price. I'd go $600 on the 19-5 if the 19-3 wasn't available. Any 4" 19 is a great revolver, my first service revolver was a Model 19.

Welcome to the world of revolvers! For curiosity, how old are you. I know younger guys these days were brought up on Glocks and the like. Us old guys were brought up on revolvers. There is NOTHING better than blued steel and wood! To us, they have personality unlike today's black guns. My vote is also for the 19-3 for the reasons already mentioned. Be forewarned, they are like Lay's Potato Chips! After you get your revolver make sure you learn how to take care of it properly. It's a little bit more work than on the black guns, but worth it.

PS - Nickel and wood isn't bad either, and stainless steel and wood is pretty good too!

Welcome from CT. As others have stated negotiate on the 19-3 but $850 still isn't bad lately.

The 19-3 is, in my opinion, the better of the two. The 19-3 does have the pinned barrel and recessed chambers that collectors love.
