Yet Another M&P 5.7 Thread

Like many long time S&W handgun (and M&Ps in particular) owners I've been watching and reading on the M&P 5.7 from its introduction at the Shot Show, YouTube videos, and thankfully from feedback from actual purchasers in the S&W Forum.

In one thread someone expressed concerns about the Non-Thumb Safety model.
I was pretty confident that a giant arms maker like S&W wouldn't release anything that would lead to lawsuits.
After a conversation with S&W CS earlier today they confirmed that the standard M&P striker type trigger mechanism was deemed as rendering the pistol safe for the Non-Thumb Safety model.
So if you're comfortable with a standard NTS M&P striker gun you should be comfortable as well with the M&P 5.7 NTS model.
If you're not comfortable with either the NTS M&P strikers or M&P 5.7 then S&W offers TS models of those for you as well. (They aim to please!!)

Secondly, and far more important to me the M&P 5.7s DO NOT require coated / lubricated cases.
She had to go ask someone about that question and after a couple of minutes she came back with that positive statement.
To any reloader remotely interested the 5.7x28 the M&P is truly a game changer.

My interest in a M&P 5.7 just went up a few notches.

According to those who own, shoot, and reload for them ALL previously available (prior to the S&W M&P 5.7) 5.7x28 rifles, carbines, and pistols using delayed blowback actions.

There is lots of information available on this topic posted at 57forum.com by those who have reloaded the 5.7x28 for many years.

As well is the availability of numerous articles detailing how delayed blowback 5.7 actions effect brass and the short life it seems to normally have when reloaded and shot in these type actions.

I do not have a 5.7 weapon of any kind and I have never reloaded for it so I am basing the need for coated / lubricated cases in non S&W M&P 5.7x28 weapons on what I've read by those who both own, shoot, and reload for the 5.7x28 in non S&W M&P weapons.

I do know that the 5.7x28 ammo I have seen does have a lacquer type coating on the case.

All pistols chambered in 5.7x28mm.
The laquer on the cases delays extraction just long enough to build up enough pressure to cycle the action. Media tumbling fired casings removes/damages the laquer causing them not to cycle.
If you search for once fired brass for sale you'll see most mention it being cleaned in Simple Green (or something) and not tumbled.
This is a game changer.

I also believe the NTS (13348) version is SAFE, but being a hammer fired single action pistol, I'd still like a manual safety.

For those who have been able to pick an M&P5.7 up, do they have a firing pin safety? I would assume they do.

Wow, didn't know that about 5.7 cases.

I'm thinking that the way the M&P 5.7 operates will allow it to get away with unlacquered cases. It does appear to be a fully locked breech action to me.

I brought home my new M&P 5.7x28 today (with thumb safety). Imagine my disappointment when i realized the thumb safety was firmly stuck in the down position. I field stripped it and there do not seem to be any user serviceable parts regarding the safety, so back to the store it went. They did not accept returns, but they are shipping it back to S&W at no charge with the return expected in a couple of weeks. Bummer. Has anyone had any thumb safety issues? I really regret not trying the safety before taking delivery...

I would have thought the lubed case thing was tied to the bottleneck Ed case sticking in non carbide dies…..
