i will give a few details and tell what choices are .
i am not a hunter but enjoy some target shooting and frequently use i silo type target for defensive practice .

i do possess several variety of hand guns , revolvers in a couple of different calibers and autos the same .

s&w 4" 357 mod 686
just bought this gun last year at gun show....shots and handles like a dream even decent with full house loads had in years past had a 6" of the same gun , but i swear this gun is more accurate. simply love it .

colt 1991 gov 45 acp
mildly customized but basically nearly stock it has a metalife chromeium finish and some fancy rosewood grips and my initials are on the slide with an old style colt rampant horse engraved there also. it is fun to shoot , accurate and reliable and i have taught several people who to point and hit with this gun who were weary to even shoot it ....yes that includes 4, 5 women who surprised theirselves after i gave them some instruction and what to expect from the gun
its just flat hard to beat a 1911 that works good !

ruger sp101 2" in 357
tough as nails and packs a punch. good defensive gun and even with only 5 shots i would trust this gun to do the job if i can do mine . it is ported , a feature some dont like , but i think it is worthwhile for me and this gun and i have seen the same gun fired with out the porting and i stil preferred my ported version , it has some special grip inserts and the mentioned porting and is simply a wonderful handful of a handgun.

s&w 442 bodyguard 2" 38
it is always with me and some wearing on the gun is evidence of it being carried. i simply love smith revolvers and this is a working gun for sure action is pretty smooth also

i wont tell you how how much i like my smith mod 19 or my glock second gen 19 or my ruger 22/45 but suffice to say those mentioned 4 guns are
hard to beat for me

how about your choices and for what reasons ? !

#1- any model 53, the longer the better
#2-any 61/2 in blued 44 mag
#3-any of my model 41"s
#4-any of my colt officers models, the best are the officers specials
#5-everything else

S&W Model 10 with a 5 inch barrel. It's more accurate than I am and shoots to POA. The .38 Special cartridge does everything that I need in a handgun. And to me, the gun balances better and is more handsome than any other gun.

It amounts to rediscovery for me. For the last few weeks, this old beater has become my favorite once again. Soon another will become my favorite once again, etc., etc.

This one is probably coming up again soon.

Ruger Mark III, plain jane with fixed sights and 5" barrel. Had I known any better I suppose I would have bought a Mark II, but there it was calling my name, with a decent price tag on it, and no Mark IIs in sight at any price. I can hit more with it than anything else I own, and I can shoot it all afternoon for less than $20. Plus, it has been a nice introduction to shooting for a few women and youngsters.

My favorite is an Accurized Colt 1911 in 45 ACP with a Barsto barrel, and Bomar sights. They will shoot 3" groups at 50 yards.

My second favorite is a 4" S&W 44 Mag.

My third would be a S&W Airweight Bodyguard.

My fourth a 6 1/2 [or 6"] S&W 44 Mag.

My fifth, my normal everyday carry gun, a Colt Lightweight Commander, in 45 ACP.

I would not want to be without the above 5 handguns.

No way could I narrow it down to one. Maybe a half dozzen depending on whats happening. While I have many fine handguns that some would call safe queens, it seems what I carry gets the nod from a light weight easy packing and are somewhat top condition shooters that wont give me a stroke if get nicked up.
A old but new s&w 3" model 36
A 5" model 29-2
A 4" model 24-3
A 3" model 66-3 lew horton special
A 2 1/2" nickle python
A .44 special 4 3/4" colt saa
Everbody needs a old ruger single six too.
EDIT, Got thinking about it and it dawned on me that I been carrying this old early 50s model M&P the most, so better include it!

Mind you, I'm a civilian and I don't do such things, so it's only what I would do, not what I have done. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

That's a Casull

As much as I love my S&Ws I choose to carry a Glock G19 with a weapon mounted light. That is my everyday carry for work. It's ugly and all business. Super reliable and does head shots at 25 yards.

If I were down to 1, it would be my 9mm CZ75B with a Kadet upper. Pretty much covers my handgun needs. I used to have 2 (bought a spare for when the shooter wore out). Never happened. Joe

My all the time is a 442, but my current two favorites are a .38/44 my dad gave me, and a 28-2 my dad gave me. I lost him a week ago, those aren't leaving my side right now....
