Maybe this is well known, but I just found out today when I received the usual packet of junk mail from the USPS. There was a discount coupon to get your dog's DNA checked. The coupon code is SHARE25 for $25 off.

So for those of you who have been hounded by your dog about his/her's ancestry, here ya' go.

Interestingly just last weekend some new neighbors regaled me with their mutt’s DNA. I smiled and nodded along like a knew what the heck they were talking about. Then I later googled this and found out as usual I was out of touch with current trends.

I traced mine to Ball Park, Hebrew National, Nathan’s and Oscar Mayer.

Then there’s the official Dog of Louisiana -
The Catahoula Leopard Dog.
It’s history is screened in mystery and legend.
Facts , no so much!
DNA Testing was supposed to clear it up.
Far as I can tell, still clear as mud!
What about it LA Guys?

Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog - Wikipedia
My son has a red catahoula with one glass (blue) eye and one brown eye. He is crazier than a **** house rat. When he comes to visit he devils Angus to death and when he/s ready for bed he jumps up on MY SIDE of the bed and goes to sleep-it's like trying to move a 90 sack of quick-crete to get him moved over. One time he decided to take a nap in Angus' kennel which really pissed Angus off. After he and my son had left, Angus went to the kennel, scratched and clawed all the bedding out to the middle of the floor and wouldn't go back in the kennel till mom had washed everything and pilled it back in :D:D:D
Catahoulas are great dogs but their personality is definitely NOT what I'm used to from labs or goldens.
Here is a site for your pleasure Tuska Homma Catahoulas
My son't catahoula is a rescue and not in the class of those guys but he DOES like to screw with the cat! :D

I can trace my two Aussies to about a mile down the road , our groomer and the owner of their mother . When I registered them with the AKC I paid the extra and got their lineage going back 3 generations . Come to find out , they are related to Prias (their mother) latest stud . I guess that makes them SOBs' ? No wait , it's daughters of B.....s . Whatever they are , I could have done without the info , but I still luv them .

I'm fine with the mystery of a mutt's heritage.

I had a mutt that was part Rottweiler and who knows what else. People would ask, "what is he?" I'd always ask back, "rottie and I'm not sure, what do you think?" I'd hear some interesting guesses.

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They put your dogs DNA in a national data base and then they use it to match up the dog poop on the sidewalk with YOUR dog and then you get the ticket.
Don't thank me, I'm paid to know this stuff.

Don't laugh, this is fact.
Some HOA's require a sample from dog owners as a condition of residence.

Cheek swab a dog my tailbone.

Black labs look pretty much the same to a non owner. Simple thing to switch out dogs for the buccal swab day. Again, not suggesting but just pointing out a random observation.

One of the local news stations out of Salt Lake City ran a little experiment with the various DNA firms. Three members of the nightly news team participated. Each news person sent their DNA to three ancestry DNA companies. The results were surprising.

Each person received three separate results back that were completely different. If I remember, one team member got one set of results that said he was primarily of English ancestry, yet another set of results told him that he was primarily of Eastern European ancestry, and still another claimed he was German and Native American. Go figure.

The other team members received results that were equally different.

If DNA results are that conflicting with humans, I'm not too sure they would be much more accurate with dogs.

I'm completely satisfied with the fact that my dog loves me, and I'll let it go at that. I don't care if her DNA links her with the hound of the Baskersville, we're best pals, and that makes me happy.:)

I figured out my rescue dog's lineage. She is a lab/Norwegian Elkhound cross. I have previously owned purebreds of both. Body & head shape and size, hair coat, most of all by personality traits.(some good. some annoying!) A DNA test would probably say differently but I'm content with my opinion.

We rescued a schnauzer looking mutt for $40 from a shelter way out in the country that found him living in a junkyard. He was my buddy for 13 years. After he passed from cancer, the wife was curious and his DNA test comes back pure bred schnauzer. He was pretty well tempered for a pure bred. Go figure.

Knew a guy in CO who had a different looking dog.
It was a Registered German Shepherd.
Until the AKC cancelled the Registration.
This dog was big. Tall , long, almost hairless.
Huge head with heavy brows.
The ‘Breeder’ who was actually a ‘Puppy Mill’ also had Great Danes!
This Dog would ride in the wife’s Beetle, butt down head up.
Looked like a really unusual person!
Other drivers almost had wrecks staring at him!
And they said when they bought him in Kansas, he was a really cute ‘German Shepherd Puppy.’
