S&W Mod 642 38 sp +p or Sig P250c 9mm and get the 45 conversion kit. I can get the sig for $375, the 642 or $380. This would be for a second carry gun instead of lugging my gp100. I figure with the sig I can practice with the 9mm then swap out the fcu and carry as a 45.

I guess it's just a personal thing, but I like my 642 so much, I don't believe I'd even consider carrying anything else. I'm in retail, and the most unobtrusive form of carry for me is front pocket. That little .38 is the most potent pocket carry piece I've yet to find. It is light, stainless, and hot enough to put a hurt on someone if needed.

I agree , only I have a 442. Since you already have a revolver no new manual of arms to learn .

I have been faced with similar situations many times in my life and this is what works best for me.

Buy, shoot, and carry both of them. If you have a preference for one over the other, sell the one you care the least for.

I love my 642 so much I just dolled it up with a Crimson Trace Laser grip.

Woo - sexy!

Your idea with the Sig makes a lot of sense. I'd far rather have a .45 than a .38 if I ever came to it. I'm not trying to start a Caliber War, that's just my preference.

Carry Guns

I am a Big Sig Fan but not a 250 Carrry Fan.
My vote is for the Smith Snubbie

Other than SW revolvers my favorite guns are Sigs. The 250 is not one of my favorites (but that's just me)

You are not talking apples to apples. The P250c is not a pocket gun. Depends on what you want to do with the gun and how you want to carry it.

I got to see and play with the new Sig P290 yesterday. Very well built but heavy and not a true DAO with double strike. Almost a hammer striker fired gun. It's bigger and heavier than my Kahr PM9, but is all metal (alloy) around $600 with night sights.

Apples & oranges. I have both & like both. The P250 is much easier to shoot well, carries 15 +1 in 9MM, & most have night sights, all for about the same price as a 642. The Sig is not a pocket gun, however. The Sig needs a holster. The light weight is an advantage over your Ruger, but if you need to pocket carry, the 642 is much better suited for that. And there's nothing wrong with carrying a 9MM. If you shoot a P250 in both 9 & 45, you may find the 9MM better suited to quick follow up shots. I place 38 Spl & 9 Mm in the same category, they're both more than adequate for civilian self defense. I had a P250 in 40 S&W, didn't shoot it nearly as well as the 9MM (the bore axis on the P250 sits kinda' high in your hand). Like I said, I like 'em both, in the end, it boils down to "what you want it to do".

I've had a couple GP100's. Even had a 3" wo/ adj. sights. Even the 3" was pretty heavy and large as a carry gun. If you've never had a LW J Frame you may want to start with a steel gun. I've got a 640 in .38 special. It's not that much heavier than a 642. It's a little more "hand friendly" than a LW and no lock. I like the looks of the smaller SIG 250. I think its a 250CC. I didn't know the 250 9mm could be changed into a .45. I assumed just .357 and .40.

The grip frame is larger for the 45 and can't be used for the 9mm or 40. The 9mm I can get locally is the compact/medium grip frame which is sized almost exactly like my SD9, I was thinking that the grip frame for the 45 in compact/small would put it very close and there is the option of getting the short pull trigger, it would be significantly lighter than my SA 1911 U/C and give 4 extra rds 9+1 in the pipe, I don't feel comfortable with the 1911 carrying with one in the chamber. BTW I would be carrying either in a Desantis speed scabbard or an iwb holster.
