Really? You must have some fantastically reliable appliances and vehicles. But I’m not going to get into an argument about it. We will just have to disagree.

As far as the NRA, they are mostly about taking in money and keeping themselves viable and in business. They really haven’t been a pro Second Amendment organization for quite some time. If they were, they would be fighting harder and actually trying to work themselves out of being necessary.

Finally got to the range. 300 rd Monarch 55gr 5.56 steel case, with a variety of mags, and not a hiccup.
The OEM handguards (without heatshields) got a bit toasty after two mags, but not enough to burn.

Time will tell. This is the first I've heard that S&W barrels may have a shorter life. In the context of this thread, reliability is excellent, so far
In terms of durability, I would think the basic milspec materials and finish 'semi-auto' bolt/carrier will develop issues before the barrel. Those parts are a big part of the higher cost of 'premium' guns.

Probably somewhere between 5-7000 rounds through my M&P15-PS. Proud to say not one failure in eight years of trouble free shooting. Shoot only my own reloads. It gets cleaned on rainy days...which are few and far between here in AZ.

I've got an earlier post. The melonite barrel won't have the same life expectancy of a plated barrel, regardless of source.

About the carrier: there are only a limited number of open sources for those. From a manufacturing/ contract compliance/ liability standpoint, it would make no sense to use different materials than milspec (8620 or proprietary equivalent) alloy steel. The very slight difference in weight between full auto and semi-auto is meaningless.

We ran the M&P15 (not Sport) in what most would consider to be an abusive environment from the point of round count. No issues with durability.

That lines up with other reviews and comparisons of melonite and chrome-plate I've seen, where chrome is considered superior for fast, high-volume fire, especially full-auto.
