This afternoon/evening I made my initial batch of Chex Mix, a Christmas regular around here and especially in my lifetime. Growing up, this time of year our kitchen looked like a bag of flour exploded in the kitchen. The best part was the Chex Mix my mom & dad used to make annually. Growing up, my earliest Chex Mix incident was over at my friend's house (our parents were friends from the fire dept., etc.) John wasn't sharing the "nuts & bolts" as we called it, so he got pushed into the TV and ended up at the E-Room getting stitches. I felt bad, I guess. The song "Michael" by the Highwaymen was playing on the radio.
I have continued the "Nuts & Bolts", "Chex Mix" or whatever it's called where you're from. I made a double batch tonight and I might make one more. I wish I'd have the recipe Mom used to make her nut roll and Zucchini bread. That stuff is what Kraft Philly Cream Cheese is made for!
Any other good Holiday snacks? Special Christmas cookies are aces, as long as they're chocolate chips. Pizzelles usually ripen this time of year too.
Most of the stuff involved the family to produce. FAMILY. TOGETHER. HAPPY. LICK THE BEATERS. MILDEW SMELLING decorations. I miss those days but they're over.

I make Grandma's/Mom's fruitcake. Also made some mini mince pies, yum.

Mom used to make mint chip cookies.

Basically chocolate chip dough with a chocolate mint candy pushed into the center of the cookie until the dough covered the mint chip.

I haven't found the chips for years.

The other Christmas cookie was a German idea: liebkuken. It's like a cookie made with a bunch of candied fruit: like a fruitcake but with a lot more cookie. My sister still makes them.

My homemade Chex mix is a huge hit with family & friends. I make a big electric roaster full and this year I'll make a second one later. Each batch is about 5 gallons.

Ms. Pawngal, after a small amount of begging, on my part Ms. Pawngal was good enough to send me a care package, and her Chex Mix is the best I've ever had:D

This is from years ago, no one in the family has made these for a long time:

roasted nuts; ham slices with cream cheese spread with a pickle slice, rolled up and cut into portions; pumpernickel bread with port o wine cheese spread; chex mix with frosting (???) drizzled over and mini M&M's; ice cream with a little milk and candy canes in a blender (to drink); white and milk chocolate covered nuts with marshmallows; cocktail weenies (toothpick needed); swedish meatballs (toothpick needed); all sorts of cookies...in a tin can. Hard candy that was red, in a shiny red wrapper, spicy cinnamon flavor (bought, not made).

So many desserts...some favorites were caramel and fudge brownies, poppyseed torte, angel food cake, puppy chow.

I can't even imagine the calories consumed, but this was the 1980's. Numerous small dishes around the house with small amount of red and green peanut M&M's. Thanks for jogging the memory. :)

I miss my maternal grandmother's Christmas bourbon balls. They always came packed in round metal tins and they had to be kept quite some distance from sources of open flames. Grandma was a hoot.
