WTB destroyed S&W or just the frame.
I am a hobbyist grip maker and would like to acquire a few S&Ws to use as templates for cutting and shaping grips. I am interested in J-frames thru N-frames round and square. All I care about is that the condition of the grip is still intact, other than that the gun can be totally unusable, it can even be literally just the grip with all other parts cut and stripped away save for the side plate. Seeing as this is the serial numbered portion of the gun I understand it probably will have to go thru an FFL dealer.

The destroyed, demilitarized or otherwise non useable frames can be sold without FFL.
I got one of the Navy Victory Frames from Gary Grace (FFL holder) who did not require paperwork because of the frame's condition.
Basically if the frame is in a condition that renders it incapable of being made into a working firearm it should be OK.
I have two K frames of different vintages, one airweight J frame RB that is really mangled forward of the grip frame. and even a N frame that came from S&W. Hammer and trigger are welded in place, S?N removed at the factory, marked "DUMMY", with everything forward of the trigger guard cut off.
They are out there, just have to scour the shows and some of the forums. This is a great place to start.

Anyone know exactly what Erick Holder and the BATF have to say about guns damaged beyond use? To me if the top strap and portion of the frame in front the trigger guard have been cut off the gun is incapable of being made into a working firearm. But that is me applying logic and common sense, who knows how the Feds would define it. A few years back the BATF did confiscated a shipment of BB or airsoft guns because, "They could be modified to fire real ammo."

Contact the local Houston/Dallas ATF office and ask them where you can find out the info you are wanting.
It will either be in one of their publications or a written ruling from DC.

I talked with a local FFL holder and friend of mine and he said the Feds treat a stripped S&W frame just like a stripped AR lower or 1911 frame. It doesn't matter if the barrel or top strap has been blown off and the gun is otherwise useless.

Alright, so far I have a K frame SB on its way.
Still looking for the following in no particular order.
J frame both round and square
K or L frame round
N frame both round and square
I guess if no k frame RB is offered I could use a second SB and just go ahead and round it.
